Thank you Amazon Web Services (AWS) for the kind invitation to attend today' session on "Scaling Healthcare Innovations in Singapore and Beyond". Thoroughly enjoyed the candid but "real" sharing from the star clinician innovator Rena Dharmawan , Li Lian Ng , and the other esteemed speakers today. Certainly innovating in healthcare comes with its unique challenges but seeing patients do better at the end of the day makes it so worth the effort. Bravo!

The Metaverse has been all the hype lately. But will it have any useful applications in Healthcare? In a recent review, we explored the potential of virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) technologies in the field, specifically in the context of the "Metaverse". Many potential benefits of using VR, AR, and other digital domains in ophthalmology were identified, such as improving patient education and training, providing remote consultations and follow-up, and enhancing surgical planning and execution. However, there were also several challenges and limitations of these technologies, such as the need for more robust VR and AR hardware and software, solutions for any VR and AR-induced side effects, and concerns about data privacy and security. Humbled to receive the 2022 Oct reviewer of the month award from Nature Portfolio npj Digital Medicine, a leading peer-reviewed journal covering cutting-edge developments in digital health globally. Peer-review is the process that enables the propagation of scientific discovery, while upholding checks and balances to published literature. Published research may inform healthcare decisions at all levels, from clinical practice in the doctors' room to health policy in government/ public office. It is always an honour to contribute to this important work. Heartfelt gratitude goes out to my academic mentors Prof Tien Yin Wong 黄天荫 and Prof Daniel Ting for all the guidance in our research, and in developing a career at the intersection of my interests in health, technology, and finance. Clinical AI in healthcare is exciting, but will providers use it? We asked over 1000 experts in the Ophthalmology field from 70+ countries in our recent multinational provider acceptance study APPRAISE. The answer, as it turns out, is an unequivocal YES but with caveats. The nuances lie in the AI's intended user, clinical context, and significance of the information provided to the healthcare decision, based on the US FDA prescriptions for AI in its latest SaMD framework. The provider's hopes for #clinical #AI included improvements in accessibility (84.7%), affordability (61.9%), and quality (69.4%) in eye #healthcare services. However, participants had mixed views regarding the impact of AI on clinical workload, with some anticipating reduced workload (48.6%, n = 572/1,176) and others instead anticipating increased workload (28.2%, n = 332/1,176). This study provided interesting insights into potential barriers and enablers to implementation that could impact the success of clinical AI commercialisation and #translation in various clinical settings. Singapore's Health Minister Ong Ye Kung recently shared about the importance of ground-up innovation in Healthcare during his address to participants at our finale night of #MGC2022 at the National University of Singapore last week. This talk greatly resonated with the spirit of the NUS Medical Grand Challenge and what we hope to achieve! This year, 18 international teams of students completed their journey from "0 to 1". It has been an honour to support this next generation of health innovators together with colleagues, Professors Yap-Seng CHONG Dujeepa D. Samarasekera Ignatius Rasiah Dean Ho Anand Bhojan Audrey Chia and Kevin SW TAN. Participating teams successfully took their idea from concept to product over the past 6 months. Some teams even managed to commercialise, reporting revenue from initial reference customers! Minister Ong had highlighted various examples of innovation in his constituency that were made possible by engaging stakeholders and de-centralising innovation. These ranged from addressing high-rise littering to commemorating the famous "Mud-flats to Metropolis" speech by the late founding PM Mr Lee Kuan Yew. 1st hybrid virtual talk ✅ Honored to share a stage with primary care stalwarts at the GP plus co-op 2022 conference on the latest developments in #HealthierSG and to share perspectives on innovations in Asthma care. A special thanks to the event partners AstraZeneca Singapore National Co-operative Federation (SNCF) and Healthlink Pte Ltd ! It was my first post #COVID zoom-era conference and quite an experience speaking infront of a mixed room with many tables vacated to make way for the various camera angles. What was your first in-person hybrid event like? Would love to hear your experience and any tips for managing the unique format of hybrid talks!

#Mentalhealth is a growing challenge as the public health battle against #COVID-19 enters a new phase. Kudos to the team from MOHT for rising up to the challenge and for successful implementation of an #AI #chatbot at the national level! 🇸🇬 Wai Chiong Loke Incidentally our students were curious about the potential utility of digital health to address the pandemic-related surge in population demand for mental health care. We worked with #publichealth and #mentalhealth experts to design a review of the latest scientific evidence based on relevant literature that was recently published. This included Wysa as one of the potential solutions that emerged. Although they have limitations, they can have a helpful role in rapidly scaling up public health responses. We are very thankful for the guidance from our expert colleagues including Dr. Joseph Leong Jern-Yi and Dr. Hsien-Hsien Lei that made this possible!
