Video series: Ghana’s tech lab – Part 5 This week, in our ongoing video series produced by UNICEF StartUp Lab and UNICEF Ghana, we introduce ASANKA, a platform that brings offline access for students and teachers to academic content with little or no internet connectivity. In collaboration with UNICEF, ASANKA offers curriculum-aligned lessons, videos, and interactive exercises, even offline. This partnership reflects UNICEF’s mission to ensure every child has access to quality education. M-PESA Africa Partners with Worldreader to Launch Free Digital Library for Children M-PESA Africa, in collaboration with international nonprofit Worldreader, has launched a free digital library for children — directly accessible through the M-PESA App. The initiative delivers thousands of age-appropriate storybooks to families across Kenya, marking a major milestone in promoting early literacy and digital learning inclusion. The integration of Worldreader’s BookSmart app within M-PESA’s “Education” section allows parents and children to access over 2,700 storybooks and learning activities in English and Kiswahili, fostering a reading culture through technology. According to Olivia R. Kimani, Worldreader’s Director of Partnerships, accessibility is key to nurturing lifelong learning. “By integrating BookSmart into the M-PESA App, families can now enjoy thousands of quality children’s books anytime, anywhere,” she said. Worldreader CEO Rebecca Chandler Leege added that this partnership helps bridge the global reading gap by bringing literacy resources to underserved communities, aligning with both organizations’ shared mission to improve education equity through digital innovation. This collaboration reflects M-PESA Africa’s broader commitment to digital inclusion, demonstrating how mobile technology can empower education and improve social outcomes across the continent. Why This Matters • Digital Literacy Revolution: Expands access to early learning resources for millions of children. • Inclusive Education: Bridges literacy gaps for low-income and rural communities. • Public-Private Collaboration: A model for tech-driven social impact through strategic partnerships. Opportunity Sector: EdTech & Digital Inclusion • Investors: Prospects in digital education, mobile learning platforms, and content localization. • Governments: Encourages public–private initiatives to advance national literacy goals. • Communities: Empowers parents and educators with easy access to learning tools. Last week, we shared how Volunteer Information Facilitators (VIFs) are building digital literacy among pastoralists in Kenya and Namibia as part of the #InfoRange project. But digital skills are just the beginning. Today, we are excited to share our brief on Co-Designing Mobile-Based Digital Solutions for Low External Input Systems. Traditional top-down approaches to agricultural technology often fail because they overlook end-user needs—designing for communities rather than with them. In the InfoRange project, the VIFs are not just teaching smartphone skills—they are enabling meaningful participation in technology co-design. This is how we endeavour to bridge the digital divide and create tools that truly serve pastoral communities. From digital literacy to active/meaningful design participation 🪜 Low adoption rates plague agricultural technology. The root cause? Designing FOR communities instead of WITH them. Happy to share our new policy brief that presents a co-design framework that flips this approach: 📱 Pastoralists actively shape digital solutions at every stage 🔄 Iterative prototyping with continuous user feedback 🤝 Collaborative teams including local facilitators 🌍 Context immersion ensuring cultural relevance The result? Pastoralists become co-creators, not recipients—ensuring solutions are contextually relevant, culturally appropriate, and sustainable.

We’re excited to announce a new collaboration with FOYE to launch a computer science access and education program for schools in rural Uganda. Through this initiative, we’ll provide PCs, training, and ongoing lessons for students and teachers — helping to build a sustainable path toward digital literacy and opportunity.
🚀 In partnership with Poremma Foundation, we’re excited to announce the upcoming pilot of our DigitalLIFT outreach program! 💻✨ 👉 What is DigitalLIFT? FOYE is committed to empowering young people with the tech skills they need to build their futures. Our DigitalLIFT program will be a lifeline, opening doors to new opportunities and brighter futures. 🌍💪 Our rural partner schools agree to introduce computer literacy as a subject and give it the same attention as other core subjects. Our first stop: Kabaare Primary School in Mbarara, Uganda. Together, we’ll educate students and teachers on the use of computers and internet over 3 days, with continued learning supported by FOYE ICT trainers. 📚👩🏽💻👨🏾💻 All of our services will be FREE for both the school and children. To ensure lasting impact, we’ll provide lesson plans for ongoing instruction and donate a laptop to the school as permanent learning infrastructure. 🎓💡 📅 Our initial 3-day outreach at Kabaare P/S is scheduled for 1st – 3rd October. This is just the beginning — DigitalLIFT will open doors to brighter futures for rural students. 🌍💪 📩 Want to get involved or support DigitalLIFT?
