Ukraine Brings Largest Battery Storage System Online ⚡🔋 DTEK has energized Ukraine’s largest battery storage project — and one of the biggest in Eastern Europe. The 200 MW / 400 MWh system, spanning six sites in Kyiv and Dnipropetrovsk, was delivered in just six months with an investment of €125 million. The project, powered by Fluence’s Gridstack solution, can supply 600,000 homes for two hours, strengthening Ukraine’s grid at a critical time. Due to restricted access, it also became the first Fluence project fully commissioned remotely, after Ukrainian engineers received advanced training abroad. Beyond adding resilience against outages, the system will also enable Ukraine to integrate more renewable energy and reduce grid disruptions. Ukraine’s energy system: how many resources will it take to rebuild — and to make it green? The Ukrainian Institute for the Future has published a comprehensive study analyzing the scale of destruction and scenarios for rebuilding the power sector. The damage is critical: - 5.2 GW of capacity destroyed — from hydro to renewables - 600+ km of high-voltage lines damaged (50 strikes per 100 km on average) - 60% of solar plants targeted; nearly all industrial facilities in Kharkiv region destroyed - Two-thirds of wind farms halted Losses by source: – 2,170 MW hydro – 1,782 MW solar – 1,303 MW wind The scale of recovery: over 55 GW of new capacity needed, with a total cost of $43.9B. Priority: solar (29.8 GW) and wind (18.3 GW). The funding gap: Ukrainian banks have invested 25B UAH; FDI in 2022–2024 reached $8.4B. Yet total needs are more than 5x higher. Since the beginning of the war, Ukraine has lost over 5.2 GW of renewable and hydropower generation capacity, representing a significant share of the energy system. Need for reconstruction. To ensure energy security, more than 55 GW of new capacity must be built, with the largest share coming from solar (29.8 GW) and wind energy (18.3 GW). Financial needs. The total cost of the “green” reconstruction of the energy system is about $43.9 billion, which significantly exceeds current investment levels. Role of the banking sector and partners. Ukrainian banks have already financed projects worth more than ₴25 billion, but this represents only a small fraction of what is required. A key task is to attract international donors, loans, and investment mechanisms with war-risk insurance. Strategic significance. Energy recovery is not only a domestic need for Ukraine but also a factor in Europe’s energy security. The “green” reconstruction will promote Ukraine’s integration into the European energy space, decentralization of the system, and strengthening of economic resilience.

☀️ This summer, solar energy became the main source of energy in EU countries for the first time. In June, solar energy accounted for about 22% of total energy production, surpassing nuclear (21.5%), wind (16%), and others. This was reported by Ember Energy. These records were made possible due to the mass installation of solar panels in recent years and the hot climate. As alternative energy sources push into the market, the price of coal in the EU has decreased. Why should Ukrainian businesses pay attention to this? Investment horizons. The EU is consistently shifting to renewable energy — this creates prospects for the development of solar projects in Ukraine as well. Competitive advantages. Companies that implement “green” technologies gain stronger positions in European markets — from access to financing to strengthening their brand. Strategic planning. The energy transition in the EU sets the tone for global trends — it’s important for Ukrainian companies to take this into account today. There are already successful examples of Ukrainian businesses switching to solar energy. For instance, the Aurora multi-market chain installed solar power plants at its distribution centers in Vinnytsia and Poltava. The result — ₴12 million in savings over two years and an enhanced brand reputation. This clearly proves: investments in “green” energy are beneficial both for the economy and for a company’s image. This week I had the opportunity to follow the discussions at the X Foro de Energía in Madrid, an important platform where the leaders of Spain’s energy and industrial sectors gathered to debate the country’s competitiveness, regulatory stability, and the path forward for the energy transition. Over two days, the debates highlighted common concerns: the high cost of electricity for electro-intensive industries, the uncertainty surrounding nuclear phase-out, the urgent need to modernize and digitalize the grid, and the financing hurdles investors face in a volatile market. At the same time, momentum around green hydrogen, energy storage, and large-scale renewable deployment was clear, with Andalusia alone announcing €17B of industrial investment and a target of 20 GW of renewables by 2026 and highlighting critical-minerals potential. Among the companies speaking were Atlantic Copper, FORTIA ENERGIA, NetOn Power, GRUPO NEOELECTRA, Asturiana de Zinc, S.A., and Tresca Ingeniería, S.A.—all of which are directly involved in industrial energy supply, manufacture, grid/renewable deployment, or decarbonization technologies. Canadian firms that bring expertise in storage systems, hydrogen equipment, grid automation or digital control, and component manufacturing may find concrete entry points through partnering with these organizations or through joint projects. The takeaway is that Spain’s energy transformation is no longer just about building capacity—it is about ensuring system reliability, lowering costs, and creating a resilient supply chain. This is where international collaboration can bring value: new digital solutions for grids, advanced storage systems, and industrial technologies that make hydrogen, renewables, and critical minerals part of a secure and competitive ecosystem. 🔵 The potential for creating a hydrogen infrastructure in Ukraine is linked to the demand in the EU 🔵 The European Union considers Ukraine as a potential supplier of renewable hydrogen. Therefore, when developing national strategies for hydrogen infrastructure development, the European hydrogen regulations should be taken into account. This statement was made by Oleksandr Haidin, Head of the Strategy Department at GTSOU, during a round table organised by the UN Global Compact Network Ukraine as part of the Ukraine Energy Initiative. In addition, the representative of GTSOU shared the company’s vision for the development of hydrogen infrastructure in Ukraine: “Our long-term ambition is to create a nationwide hydrogen transportation network. The company takes into consideration a number of safety factors and commercial considerations, the priority is meeting the demand for access to the developed EU market,” said Oleksandr Haidin. The GTSOU’s representative also highlighted the need of considering EU regulations, in particular Directive 2024/1788 and Regulation 2024/1789, which establish rules for the functioning of the hydrogen market, requirements for hydrogen network operators and, most importantly, focus on the transport and use of hydrogen in its pure form. When it comes to implementing hydrogen pipeline infrastructure projects in Ukraine, the first project is likely to be an international connector, with further expansion along the Central European Hydrogen Corridor route, which runs through the Carpathian Mountains to the junction point of many trunk pipelines in the west of Ukraine, which will serve as the “gateway” for the exporting Ukrainian hydrogen to high demand areas in the EU. As a reminder, GTSOU is systematically involved in the development of the new market and cooperates with international partners in this area. In particular, GTSOU is developing a joint project called CEHS (Central European Hydrogen Corridor) with the GTS operators of Slovakia (eustream, a.s.), the Czech Republic (NET4GAS) and Germany (OGE).
