Last spring, I started a small digital detox club driven by one question that’s been on my mind: What makes us human in a world where AI can do almost everything we can? Each Saturday at Seoul Forest, we gather — no phones, no distractions. Just people enjoying nature, reading, meditating, doing puzzles, having small chats, or simply lying on a picnic mat, soaking in the moment. One simple rule: stay present, device-free. What started as a personal experiment has now grown to over 100 members. I’ve held off posting about it, feeling a bit conflicted — promoting an anti-digital space online feels ironic. But I realized this isn’t about rejecting technology; It’s about reclaiming the uniquely human experiences machines can’t replicate: warmth, creativity, and genuine connection. Today marks the first gathering of 2025 after a winter break and I’m reminded again of how meaningful this community has become. As I dive deeper into the "AI vs human" question in my professional life, this club continues to remind me that while technology evolves, our ability to find meaning, feel connected, and create — without an algorithm’s push — is something profoundly human. If this resonates with you, I’d love to hear your thoughts. I’m looking to connect with people who are passionate about fostering real human connection amidst technology. Feel free to share this with anyone who might find this idea intriguing!
I thought of you the other day when I saw this Japanese game show running on Netflix. The premise is to drop ten contestants off in foreign city and they cannot use their devices for ten days. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt35510210/?ref_=ext_shr_lnk
I love it!!
This is so cool, Ju! And commendable and worthwhile. Thank you for sharing.

5moI recently purchased a "Brick" for my phone (https://getbrick.app/) and it's been so helpful to me. Now, when I do scroll social media, I can tell I'm doing it just to distract myself from my thoughts or the world happening around me. I'm able to detach myself and not get lost in the endless scroll! I love what you're doing with your digital detox club and am cheering you on!
