This #WorldChildrensDay, we’re excited to introduce ‘My Healthy School’ – our upcoming project in #Kenya and #Ethiopia, where we currently provide essential meals to schoolchildren in 19 schools! For many students, these meals are a major reason to attend school regularly and continuously. Next year, we’re expanding these efforts, to respond to the severe challenges faced by communities, especially after years of devastating droughts that have wiped out livestock and livelihoods. 'My Healthy School' unites the sectors of #WASH (water, sanitation and hygiene), health, nutrition, and environment in one holistic approach. Improved hygiene facilities, nutrition education, and sustainability measures aim to enhance student wellbeing and uplift entire communities. Thanks to the support of the German Federal Foreign Office (Auswärtiges Amt) and our national partner PACIDA, Kenya, we currently provide meals in Kenya and Ethiopia. With funding from Bundesministerium für wirtschaftliche Zusammenarbeit und Entwicklung (BMZ), our “My Healthy School” project will build on these efforts. In December 2024, Pamoja Tuwalishe, Tanzania's largest USDA Foreign Agricultural Service (FAS)-funded school meals program implemented by Global Communities, showcased its impact at the 24th Global Child Nutrition Forum (GCNF) in Osaka, Japan. The event brought together over 400 government, NGO, private sector, research and academic stakeholders from 84 countries to discuss innovations in child nutrition through school meal programs. Dr. Wilson Mahera highlighted Tanzania's efforts in enhancing collaboration among local governments, schools, and communities to improve educational outcomes and nutritional standards. The forum emphasized the importance of multi-sectoral collaboration, dedicated government financing, and active community participation in fostering resilient school feeding systems. Key recommendations included: 🔄 Establishing community-led processing facilities to boost local food production. 🧑🌾 Using school meal programs to drive agricultural transformation. 🍲 Ensuring budget allocations for school feeding programs. 🌍 Recognizing school meals as a strategic approach to transform food systems. The insights shared at the #GCNForum2024 reaffirmed the progress made in improving school meal program quality and underscored the need for sustainable systems to consistently deliver nutritious food to school children. Pamoja Tuwalishe remains committed to enhancing capacities, fostering collaboration, and advocating for robust policies to support food systems transformation.

With 100+ countries and 130+ partners, the coalition is advancing national school meals programmes to ensure every child receives a nutritious meal by 2030. ✨🍲 Cambodia 🇰🇭 joined the Coalition in August 2021, committing to promote nutrition, health, and education for every child. Despite the efforts of dedicated staff, who spend significant time sourcing affordable food, many children are left without adequate nutrition. This situation underscores the need for innovative solutions to food security. Today, as we celebrate the International Day of Education, we are reminded of the critical role nutrition plays in shaping brighter futures. Education and proper nutrition are inseparable. When children have access to nutritious food, they are more likely to stay in school, focus better in class, and perform at their best. This year’s theme, “Learning for Lasting Peace,” highlights the importance of addressing foundational needs to support thriving educational environments. Globally, an estimated 153 million children under 18 are said to be food insecure or lacking sufficient food for a healthy life. Poor health and nutrition are major barriers to educational access and achievement in low-income countries, impacting social skills, academic performance and overall health. A child experiencing food insecurity may attend school without a nutritious meal, arriving hungry and unable to concentrate. They might also be frequently absent, either to help their family, care for siblings or simply because they lack the energy due to malnutrition. This cycle of hunger disrupts their learning abilities, threatening their potential for a healthy and productive life. While poverty and inequality are the root causes of hunger, long-running conflicts, climate-related extreme weather events and economic or health shocks exacerbate the scope and impact of hunger for young people around the world. For over half a century, Global Communities has been at the forefront of expanding access to safe, nutritious food. We work with communities, smallholder farmers and women to combat food insecurity, hunger and malnutrition. School meals are a key tool in this fight, not only combating child hunger but also improving educational outcomes and local economies. In 2024 alone, Global Communities has served over 30 million meals to 295,777 schoolchildren. In partnership with the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), through the McGovern-Dole International Food for Education and Child Nutrition Program (McGovern-Dole), we are improving educational outcomes for children and providing them with nutritious school meals in a safe, inclusive and sustainable way. In 2024 alone, Global Communities has served over 30 million meals to 295,777 schoolchildren. Global Communities, through our USDA-funded McGovern-Dole projects in Tanzania, Madagascar and Central America, is sowing seeds of hope and expanding the right to food for schoolchildren. Using a combination of USDA-donated commodities, locally procured food commodities, parental in-kind contributions and production from school gardens, Global Communities is helping to secure children’s well-being and better futures by providing school meals in a collaborative, holistic and sustainable way.
