What if school meals could do more than feed children–what if they could transform entire communities? That's the question we explored today at the #GlobalChildNutritionForum during our workshop co hosted with Catholic Relief Services: “Local Ingredients, Global Impact: The Future of School Meals Through Local and Regional Procurement (LRP).” With over 100 attendees, the session engaged participants in interactive presentations, hands-on exercises, and group discussions. The energy and buzz in the room reflected the growing global momentum to reimagine how school meal programs can deliver sustainable, localized impact. Key Takeaways From the Workshop: 🔶 Strategic Procurement for Impact: We explored how LRP strengthens local farmers and agribusinesses, improves nutrition in school meals, and enhances sustainability by reducing reliance on external sources. 🔶 Building Effective Strategies: Through engaging group exercises, participants tackled hypothetical scenarios like budget limitations and sourcing specific commodities, such as fortified maize and eggs and vegetable oil. The resulting strategies emphasized innovation, sustainability, and forward-thinking planning. Beyond the Workshop 🔶 World Vision also engaged in meaningful discussions with USDA officials and Malawi Education Minister Madalitso Kambauwa Wirima. These conversations focused on current programs, addressing on-the-ground challenges, and exploring opportunities to deepen collaboration—reaffirming our commitment to impactful partnerships. Why LRP Matters: 🔶 Local and regional procurement is a cornerstone to World Vision’s approach to school meal programs, empowering communities, supporting sustainable development, and ensuring children receive the nutrition they need to thrive. Thank you to everyone who joined us for the workshop and shared your insights.
