"In the findings of Polygon's anime study, there were so many moments of elation and validation of the daily data analysis we do everyday here at Crunchyroll," said Punnoose Isaac, Senior Vice President of Data & Insights at Crunchyroll. 💡 To better understand just how vast anime culture has become, Polygon surveyed more than 4,000 Americans over the age of 18 about their anime consumption habits. Their results show that not only is anime’s popularity growing significantly with each generation, but that — among younger audiences — it’s even surpassing cultural touchstones like the NFL. https://lnkd.in/eDkEW2vt
It's absolutely a seismic shift. What comprehensive and fascinating work Polygon have done here! When I first experienced anime culture in Japan, as a teen in 1994, it was so much more than watching episodes on TV. Reading weekly JUMP, collecting manga volumes, videos, CDs of the soundtracks, going to see OVA screenings in cinemas seasonally, all kinds of merch... it was a total experience. I have a Dragonball Z pencil box I still use that is now almost 30 years old! Anime has meant a lot to me and still does. It's a special feeling to see more and more people out there tap into its mahou... it really is magical in a way that's hard to describe. I'm inspired to see Crunchyroll working to bring the full culture of the anime medium to the rest of the world. 💪🏼 Oh and this is my favourite part of the Polygon article!
Thrilled to see the intersection of data analytics and anime culture highlighted in Polygon's study! Back in the day, even if it wasn’t exactly considered “cool” to watch anime, watching episodes in TV weekly meant the entire world. The feeling and nostalgia of how it was was back then truly a special experience. And knowing that Gen Z watching anime at 43% vs the 25% of the NFL now, is just mind blowing. It's magical to see more people discovering its charm. It's evident that anime's widespread appeal is reshaping cultural norms, surpassing traditional touchstones. Kudos as well to Crunchyroll for sharing the complete anime culture worldwide!
Kids are now learning how to walk, then Naruto run.
It's so wonderful to see this. As a elder anime viewer it's exciting to see this shift. I love my Crunchyroll subscription! Anime can truly be enlightening and opens up whole new worlds. It has such a vast catalog of genres allowing the viewer sites, sounds, languages and cultures that they otherwise may not be exposed to. Opening up dreams of being animators, composures, writers, designers and so much more. Anime/Manga truly has given me the strength in times of need and the push of endurance to keep going one step more. Run with the wind literally help me run a marathon!
I can still recall the late nights in Middle School where I would stay up exploring the early web for any anime I could find on my desktop, waiting until 1-2am when Inuyasha would air on Adult Swim (all against my parents wishes of course!) I love to see this growing popularity and love for the culture. I think it's safe to make the argument that anime has become ingrained in cultures across the globe.
Welcome news for us!
Going from being made fun of because anime was "weird" to it becoming a mainstream cultural phenomenon has been the best experience. Anime tells fantastic creative stories with interesting characters. Can't wait to see how the genre grows as it becomes more popular.
Crunchyroll This is wonderful! How can we help the talented anime creators barely scraping by and committing suicide while we enjoy sitting here enjoying and profiting thanks to them? https://youtu.be/BDEIPa9b3OU?si=iFxzNh9OuLXJ-d5r
