National Flood Insurance Program FEMA’s Post

Among the many different causes of flooding includes ice jam flooding. This is caused when chunks of ice are pushed together to create a dam due to heavy precipitation. As the water begins to build up, this causes a spillover and potentially breaking of ice walls. With ice breaking, the rush of water carries chunks of ice, which can cause damage to surrounding structures. #FloodFacts #Flooding

My hometown East Grand Forks Mn experienced ice jams in our flood of the century in 97. Ice also jammed the bridge and caused the river to flow backwards resulting in our neighborhood flooding.
