A stark reminder of the power of (poor) communication. I've seen it many times: CEO waves off strategic counsel and insists "I've got this." #communication #bankrun https://lnkd.in/gpjYzJvT

Some tough year-end comms lessons from Paul Argenti. I would also include Silicon Valley Bank and OpenAI, for reminding us that non-communication is a non-strategy. Who else?
In 2023, companies who had a communication strategy for social issues stood strong… …and those who didn’t damaged their brand considerably. Several companies bungled their communications in an especially detrimental way, as listed below. When it comes to what we can learn from their mistakes, it’s simple: Have a strategy and stick to it. This trend isn’t going away. —-- This will be my last post until the new year. Hope everyone gets some time off to enjoy the holidays!

CEOs/founders: If you're not one of the -- let's say -- ~20 percent of leaders who already get a comms POV on any significant issue, please heed this advice from an esteemed academic. #leadershipcommunication
The most actively ignored group of employees is the communications team. I see leaders ignore them all the time - and much to their company’s detriment. Company leaders hire qualified communications teams but neglect to listen to any of their advice. Most of the time, these very same company leaders are the first to complain about their organization’s poor internal and external comms. To solve their organization’s communication deficiency, they turn to people like me. Suddenly, they listen to everything I say - even though I’m usually repeating some version of what their comms team has already told them. By ignoring the talent that exists right under their nose - the very same talent they chose to hire in the first place - they slow down the progress of their organization and complicate what could’ve been a pretty easy process. Communication is an incredibly important part of any and every company. So don’t ignore the comms team. They know what they’re doing - if you’d just let them do it.

Each month on average, 10 U.S. newspapers disappear. These smaller, local news outlets -- the building blocks of a free press -- are being replaced by syndicated "content" (and, increasingly, AI-generated drivel). Concerned? Check out Ina Fried's insights -- some alarming -- from AI's Code Conference takeover.
Lessons from the AI whirlwind A year ago, the last time the Code Conference gathered a crowd of Silicon Valley luminaries in Southern California, AI was just one item on a long agenda of tech issues, and TikTok dominated the discussions. Yes, but: The year since brought ChatGPT, an AI boom, and a slew of controversies that the industry is only beginning to address. In the article I look at three main early lessons - plus a caveat that this all changing so fast that one can’t take for granted that conclusions one day make for valid assumptions the next. https://lnkd.in/gqjVYByg

Teflon Elon will get his comeuppance eventually. In the meantime, he's giving us an object lesson in corporate responsibility. Musk has needlessly exposed the reputations of SpaceX, $TSLA, X, Boring Co., Neuralink, et al for years, of course. But this time, he's crossed an *extremely* bright line that will have serious legal and regulatory consequences. And morally, this is just appalling. https://lnkd.in/gBCT_SbM

Technology reporter at The New York Times and author of “Your Face Belongs To Us: A Secretive Startup’s Quest to End Privacy as We Know It”
A few years ago, I got a tip that seemed too outrageous to be true: A mysterious company called Clearview AI claimed it had scraped billions of photos from the public web to identify just about anyone based only on a snapshot of their face. It led me on a fascinating reporting journey and to my book, Your Face Belongs To Us, which comes out in 3 weeks! One big question is whether the average person is ready for a world in which anonymity ceases to exist.
