We bid farewell to ION SCV 005 Almighty Alexius, which has officially concluded its mission with a safe re-entry into the Earth's atmosphere. 🌏 The Spacelust mission began on April 1st, 2022, with ION being launched into a 500 km Sun-synchronous orbit (SSO). 🛰 SCV 005 was the first OTV to perform a RAAN shift maneuver and during its mission, it carried out inclination adjustments and multiple altitude changes. On August 6th, 2024, after 858 days in #space, ION safely re-entered and disintegrated in the atmosphere over the South Atlantic Ocean. This re-entry was strategically planned to clear the occupied orbit shortly after the mission's completion. 🚀 Using #spacecraft like ION to test experiments and new #technologies in space provides a #sustainable alternative to the conventional deployment of CubeSats. Traditional methods often leave #CubeSats in orbit long after their missions end, adding to the growing problem of space debris. By integrating multiple experiments within a single mission and ensuring our #spacecraft vacate their orbits sooner than individual CubeSats, we take a proactive stance in mitigating space debris, paving the way for cleaner and safer space operations. #wearedorbit #cleanspace #satellites #spacedebris #newspace #sustainability #spacesustainability
