Present Future Architects is thrilled to see the North Austin Community Center open its doors after many years in the making! We celebrate the investments already made in the community and the new opportunities this facility will provide through the support of By The Hand Club For Kids, Grace + Peace and Intentional Sports. The new 152,000sf facility includes the first FIFA regulation indoor soccer field in Chicago, E-sports lounge, basketball / volleyball courts, performance training, physical therapy, multi-purpose space, classrooms / computer labs, outdoor mini-pitches and play spaces. We're big believers in optimizing building structures to minimize material use, but what exactly goes into optimization? We start with the basics and build from there. Take a simple mass timber beam. We've performed over 80,000 iterations to determine how an optimal beam size responds to two variables; fire resistance requirements and material grade. While it is commonly understood that larger hourly ratings or lower material grades will increase required member sizes, identifying the ideal size across varying limit states is a challenge. By exploring the entire envelope, we're able to identify the optimal size for any set of demands. This approach can lead to up to a 25% reduction in beam volume compared to more traditional methods. This is one small way we're optimizing structures, but it doesn't stop there.
