For many, a morning cup of coffee is a necessity – so it’s of little surprise that Australians use an estimated 1 billion disposable coffee cups a year. Although designed for single use, a plastic coating within these cups prevents recyclability and often sees them end up in landfill. Now, Dr Matt Flynn is working on a solution to filter out the excess waste from our favourite brew. Part of the University’s Centre for Future Materials NO WASTE team, Dr Flynn and his colleagues are designing structural materials from single-use cups, including panels and boards. Two of our researchers will explore the scientific mysteries of outer space after being granted access to the world-renowned James Webb Space Telescope! Astrophysicist Dr Chelsea Huang and Astrophysics PhD student Alex Venner were selected through the highly contested application process and will use the opportunity to advance their respective research projects. Launched in 2021 by NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration, the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) is the most powerful of its kind, boasting an array of scientific instruments and Infrared capabilities.
