This time last week Nevine Mica-Hawkyard and I were attending day 1 of Utility Week Live! I've had some time to think about my learnings from the very insightful presentations and panel discussions, and how these can help us drive environmental improvement on the sites of the suppliers that we work with. Please find my top 5 takeaways from the event below! 1. Resilience will be built on the foundations of innovation – we cannot simply re-evaluate what we’ve already got, the shared challenge of climate change requires an overhaul of the way that we think and breaking away from traditional methods of assessing value. We cannot ‘build our way out of climate change’, but we can innovate our way to effective adaptation. 2. Collaboration is essential to decarbonisation. To ‘re-engineer our understanding of innovation’ (as put so beautifully by Dr Angela MacOscar, Head of Innovation at Northumbrian Water), we can benefit from looking across sectors for inspiration and driving collaborative partnerships to solve complex issues. 3. Although we can’t reach our goals alone, it is vital that we, as a business in the sustainability space, lead the green debate to drive progress for both our clients, suppliers, and the industry as a whole. We are in a unique and valuable position, able to turn the dial on carbon emissions in global, multi-sector supply chains. 4. We must adopt the principle of ‘do no harm’ – Ruth Waters, Evidence Director at Natural England, highlighted that we must move away from simply ‘trading off’ environmental damage, and move towards designing out damage and implementing regenerative practices. 5. Finally, “do not let perfect be the enemy of the good” was quoted, an important mantra to keep in mind when pursuing a greater, and greener, future for all. We will not reach our goals today or even tomorrow, but the incremental differences that we make add up to the shift change we will need to see to build a world where we can not only survive, but thrive! I look forward to utilising the above when supporting our suppliers to become more sustainable, in turn helping our clients reach their ambitious carbon targets.
