In just about an hour, teams at Nike will start closing their laptops for our regular Summer Friday hours. But today is *extra* special. Nike HQ is also powering down for a full week off starting next Monday. Our senior leaders are all sending a clear message: Take the time to unwind, destress and spend time with your loved ones. Do not work. It's times like this that I'm so grateful to be a part of this team. In a year (or two) unlike any other, taking time for rest and recovery is key to performing well and staying sane. This past year has been rough - we're all human! and living through a traumatic event! - but I'm hopeful that the empathy and grace we continue to show our teammates will have a positive impact on the culture of work moving forward. It's not just a "week off" for the team... it's an acknowledgment that we can prioritize mental health and still get work done. Support your people. It's good business but it's also the right thing to do.

Just like that, Nike just did it!

While the effort seems a good step towards acknowledging mental health well being, would giving a week off from work really help? Or would "flexibility" at work provide improved access to employees to prioritize themselves? Are people stressed because they are unable to take time off work, or is it because none of us were prepared to handle what a chaotic pandemic introduced? Zoom meetings (reduced one on one interaction in person), reduced social interaction and basically living in a bubble of fear and doubt are a few of the stress triggers.

What a joke. "Our CORPORATE people are SOOOOOOOO overworked. But we don't give a damn about our retail employees. They have it easy." Horrible double standard bullshit.

What about your retail workers. What are you doing for them? They are the front line workers risking their lives and they are probably the ones that are paid the least. Good for you goes to do this but do something for them. They deserve to be treated the same as you guys in corporate. While we are at it. How about the workers overseas that are being exploited through working very long hours on a few dollars a week. Let’s do something for them… hmmm double their pay perhaps. Enjoy your week off

As a former Portlander now living, coincidentally, not too far from your Netherlands outpost, I've come to have a lot of respect for Nike. You don't get it all right, but you learn, grow, evolve, and become an example to others. Thanks.
