World Ocean Day is a reminder of the critical role that oceans play in the global environment and in our everyday lives. Oceans are connected to all life on Earth. They produce more than 50% of the planet's oxygen and absorb 30% of carbon emissions. Oceans are critical for people's health and livelihoods. They provide the main source of protein for over one billion people. By 2030, 40 million people will be employed in ocean-based industries. But we are taking more from the ocean than can be replenished. 90% of big fish populations are depleted, and 50% of coral reefs have been destroyed. We must better protect and preserve the biodiversity of the ocean while maintaining the natural capital of its resources. At WSP, we use technology with nature-based solutions to help restore marine ecosystems and enhance aquatic biodiversity: from innovative mussels farming in Denmark to cetacean conservation off the coast of Brazil to protecting critically endangered North Atlantic right whales. Historically, groundwater and surface water have been managed independently as separate resources with different requirements and regulations. But attitudes toward that approach are changing. “Many regions of the U.S. are facing water scarcity, which is driving efforts toward the optimized use of all available resources and diversification of sources,” said Robert Maliva, WSP USA principal hydrogeologist. Today, practitioners refer to the “groundwater-surface water nexus,” and by recognizing the interactions between the two it is possible for agencies to better manage water resources as a whole. Resilience is a journey, not a destination. Climate change impacts water, energy, and food supplies. It puts security at risk, damages infrastructure, adversely impacts human health and biodiversity, and influences regional and global economies. In observation of World Water Day 2022, WSP USA partnered with the Alliance for Global Water Adaptation (AGWA) to develop an important whitepaper that outlines two frameworks that can guide Future Ready® organizations along their climate-resilience journey. Our Groundwater Plume Analytics® tools are providing clients with an innovative, more accurate and visual assessment of #groundwater hazards. The theme of this year's World Water Day is “Groundwater – Making the Invisible Visible”. Our Groundwater Plume Analytics® tools are capable of literally achieving this goal. Joe Ricker, Principal Engineer at WSP USA, comments on using these tools for clients, “They could see and understand the data in a much more compelling way than usual.” Timothy Goist, Principal Geologist for WSP USA said, “Using the tools’ capabilities, we can spend 30 minutes with a layperson, and they will usually grasp a very complicated groundwater analysis.” Read more about how these tools can help with your groundwater projects: https://lnkd.in/dRg5rTcn #WorldWaterDay #Water
