This bought me to tears. This young woman, Midshipman Sydney Barber, will be the first Black Female Brigade Commander at the US Naval Academy. 40 years later. Thank you Sydney! Love you!
This is awesome! Thank you Janie Mines for sharing this.
Stop highlighting people because they are Black or anything other than just talented people! Her being black is not an advantage or disadvantage, but her determination, passion, courage and commitment are what got her to where she is now and where she will go in the future. No one gives a crap (especially the military and my Navy) if she is black, white, or any other color in the rainbow. What we care about is Can You Do The Job? If you have to put any descriptive word in front of someone's name (like black, brown, female) you might be part of the problem.
While I am pleased and delighted, I will be FAR happier when we can stop saying "First Black Woman" because Black Excellence is expected, and widely recognized. Black women have been so qualified for a very long time. My military veteran cap is off to this talented woman. I hope she inspires many, many more. Progress may be late, but I will take progress any day. I'm proud of and for her, and know her family is thrilled.
I apologize if I’m confused but I’m not keen on Navy lingo given I’m in the Army; a midshipman is a naval cadet, so she will be the student leader of the Naval Academy? Like, the liaison between the actual academy leadership and all of the others cadets (midshipmen)?
Why does skin color get credit? How about a great sailor does a great job?
The Superintendent and Commandant of Midshipman at the US Naval Academy should be removed from their positions for abusing their authority. Many folks have already pledged to stop giving to the US Naval Academy because this is disgraceful and their actions are evil and do not align with the Bill of Rights. All Facebook accounts of all midshipman, cadets, and personnel serving in the military should be shut down effective immediately as Facebook is creating disorder and chaos in military ranks. Please disseminate widest distribution so we can get this around the world to help US Naval Academy Midshipmen 1/C Chase Standage. I understand if your not able to help, but please pass it on. Sharing is Caring. Pray for him that he is retained and the future of our US Naval Academy. https://givesendgo.com/GWFU Thanks, Christine Ann Russell Metastatic Cancer Thriver Disabled Combat Veteran Naval Officer/Military Whistleblower/Engineer/Teacher USNA Class of 2000
Can’t imagine the struggles you conquered to get where you are. What a super role model you are for young women in the process of tough decisions about their future. Those years and decisions are always a challenge. And you will be helping them by your success. As a pediatrician I can tell most high schoolers are clueless when it come to realizing what they may accomplish if only they put their mind to it. So proud of you. PS my dad was an MD in the Naval medical corps, serving on Iwo Jima throughout.
Totally Awesome
