The cyber attack which hit CMA CGM is clearly not yet resolved and the sites for CMA CGM, APL, ANL and CNC remains down (written 29 Sept 08:15 CET). And since we do not know any details as to the specific nature and extent of the attack it is difficult to ascertain when this will be back up. However, the communication coming from CMA CGM appears to be somewhat behind the curve. At the time of writing this, the latest communication is on Twitter and is 17 hours old stating that “A new communication will be issued at the end of the day”, something that clearly has not been done as this was posted yesterday - at least neither on their corporate website nor on their official Twitter site where they started the initial communication. There are no indications as to when they expect to release more information as to the status. Managing a successful cyber attack is a challenging task requiring a dedicated effort on many fronts at the same time. However, pro-active communication is widely regarded as an important part of the necessary damage control but appears not to be fully forthcoming at this time.

With the increasing number of e-services carriers offer, it is probably a good idea they maintain a permanent status page. When things are running well like 99.999% of the time, it gives peace of mind to their customers . And when things are bad, well, customers will also appreciate it. I like the concise way Apple conveys the status of their services https://www.apple.com/support/systemstatus/ for example.

There was no notification yesterday, but today I received multiple customer advisories from their system and from my CMA account manager. Phones are not working, eBusiness is not working... currently can only communicate by email. No estimated date/time the issue will be resolved. Truckers have hard time reaching equipment team to find out where to return empties and additional cost of yard storage occurred to BCOs (because truckers don’t know where to return and don’t want to take chance of CMA penalty if returning without authorization)

This sounds like there may not have been a media policy and/or emergency response procedure for handling this type of event when it comes to communicating with the public. Let's hope they have a trick up their sleeve which will quickly restore their business operations/systems.

Lars, thank you for your post. Every company should have a crisis management plan in place by now. As you noted, 3 years and two major global carriers (COSCO 2018) presented ample opportunities for contingency. Information the market needs -are ACH payments for collect freight secure, and will they be timely recognized.? -will they be circulating the alternate communication protocols? -verification of line releases, free time, availability, etc -impact on their vessel sharing partners -resolution process for Demurrage & Detention disputes that will surely be an issue. Just some of the critical care items. In our business, our customers expect us to over-communicate. I'm certain the #FMC will be watching their D&D crisis management closely. P.S. There is an entire Tech industry dedicated to securing IT platforms in a totally different kind of CONTAINER, worthwhile for companies to explore. Like cargo insurance, it's what you can't afford to not do.
