On this #FSCFriday, meet Edgar Chaparro from Ejido – an indigenous community in Carobachi, Chihuahua, Mexico, who has shown us how education is interlinked with sustainable forest management and forest community development. More than two decades ago, the Ejido funded his forest engineering studies at the Autonomous University of Chihuahua on the basis that he will return to the community upon completion to contribute to their forest management. Edgar was the first to receive a college education in his community. Today, he works as a forestry technician for the Ejido. Throughout his career, Edgar has participated in several forestry projects for example to modernise forestry activities for the Ejidal and to create over 200 permanent roles for local communities in forest management. The Ejido administrates the Sierra forests with a total area of 27,997 hectares, of which 17,000 hectares are within a forest management plan and 6,000 are reserved for conservation. They have received the FSC Forest Management certification for their commitment to responsibly manage the forests, preserve biodiversity while ensuring the economic viability for local livelihood.
