The myth of the Great Indian Middle Class. Rs 25000 = $ 334.72 ( at exchange rates today). If 90% is earning less that Rs 25000 what are the products that are being created for this consumer on the internet? The argument is usually that volume of population helps. It cofounds everyone who is looking in from the outside. (there is an extra 0 in the Rs 100000 number in the infographic. Thank you Angana Sripur for pointing this out) And everyone here on Linkedin is in the top 1% of Indian population, hopefully paying their direct and indirect taxes. These two data points are useful for products being built for India and Bharat. The opportunity is HUGE. #opportunity #india

Linesbysu.com is an art venture by Sudha Pillai. Currently selling her own work as functional art. Eventually opening itself to other artists to set up their own shops and sell interpretations of their art. Sudha is a friend and she has set this up herself using Wix.com 🚀 This is probably one of the first ventures that has been done along the 'no code' lines. Am amazed by Sudha's fast learning curve. From fretting about how to setup a simple web page to setting up the payment, logistics and putting her work out there, this is awesome.

It is not surprising to see crypto being compared to the subprime crisis of 2008 by Paul Krugman. In this piece he compares Crypto crisis of today to the subprime crisis of 2008. Krugman says "Investors in crypto seem to be different from investors in other risky assets, like stocks, who consist disproportionately of affluent, college-educated whites. According to a survey by the research organization NORC, 44 percent of crypto investors are nonwhite, and 55 percent don’t have a college degree. This matches up with anecdotal evidence that crypto investing has become remarkably popular among minority groups and the working class." The same seems to be the case in India. It is not the informed who are investing but the uninformed newbies who are likely to be burnt. Here is the link to The Morning Context story which talks about Crypto investing being major in T2 cities in India. #Paywall https://lnkd.in/eis7QDdR (In 2008 in the boardroom of the company that acquired the startup that I ran, two very serious gentlemen spoke about the subprime crisis and how the economy would shrink and die. One of them was the largest stockbroker in the country and the other a cult figure from the first wave of internet businesses. Wonder what they have to say about Crypto in 2022)

Come see what the future of e-Commerce and Web 3.0 looks like! Our engineering team led by CTO Rick Zhuang is made up of the best and brightest globally! Prior to joining Firework Rick was the Head of Engineering for Tencent and Alibaba Group, where he led development of their TMall Retail, Taobao Content Platform, and what Taobao then called a “private domain content ecosystem”. Super excited to continue watching this stellar technical team reach new heights. #team #engineering #future #commerce #ecommerce

#longread DAOs (decentralized autonomous organizations) will eventually replace the traditional model (of how a company is built or run). A DAO is an internet-native organization with core functions that are automated by smart contracts, and with people who do the things that automation cannot (e.g., marketing, software development). In practice, not all DAOs are decentralized or autonomous, so it is best to think of DAOs as internet-based organizations that are collectively owned and controlled by its members. #technology #dao #decentralizedfinance #crypto

interesting weekend read. Microsoft, perhaps the most successful tech company in history, got its break when Bill Gates sold IBM an operating system he didn’t have. (He and Paul Allen subsequently bought what they needed from another programmer, but they didn’t tell him they had the deal with IBM to distribute it.) Allegedly, an engineer at the company coined the term "vaporware" a year later. Promising something that doesn’t exist is as central to the Valley ethos as late-night coding sessions, hoodies, and the hallucination that the public has asked you to solve the world’s problems vs. just do less damage.

This paragraph hits: Some scientists say these worries about attention are a moral panic, comparable to the anxieties in the past about comic books or rap music, and that the evidence is shaky. Other scientists say the evidence is strong and these anxieties are like the early warnings about the obesity epidemic or the climate crisis in the 1970s. I think that given this uncertainty, we can’t wait for perfect evidence. We have to act based on a reasonable assessment of risk. If the people warning about the effects on our attention turn out to be wrong, and we still do what they suggest, what will be the cost? We will spend less time being harassed by our bosses, and we’ll be tracked and manipulated less by technology – along with lots of other improvements in our lives that are desirable in any case. But if they turn out to be right, and we don’t do what they say, what’s the cost? We will have – as the former Google engineer Tristan Harris told me – downgraded humanity, stripping us of our attention at the very time when we face big collective crises that require it more than ever. #technology #people #attentioneconomy
