How comfortable are you when having a conversation with your co-workers? I often hear stories where people find themselves in hot water for talking politics in the office. So here a few things to keep in mind. Limit your engagement on the topic- even among your best buddies in the office. As a public speaker, I usually know my audience so I pretty much know what to plan for. However, sometimes the unexpected happens like a loaded, hateful question, and other times I get smile and they say good job. Either way, I keep the reply brief and say, “yes, these are crazy times.” Here’s the thing, you never know what someone’s agenda might be -- and it is not worth having a colleague, boss or client pre-judge you. So always be nice and stay cool. You’d be surprised just how far a smile or a little gesture can take the pressure off. And if you get push back, try saying, “We can disagree without being disagreeable.” It usually lightens things up. #politickingpolitics

I just try to stay on the topic at hand.. if I do that, and re-focus the conversation to the end goal, everything stays professional. Agreeing on the goal at the outset sets a positive tone for whatever happens deciding on the best path to achieve it.
