sitting in my back yard trying to read a book, but flies are all over me; I swat them and they keep coming back for more; this made me wonder why flies (and those who make claims about AI) are so stupid; I started thinking about the signs of intelligence: recognizing danger knowing if it is ok to say what you are thinking and how to phrase it so it doesn’t cause trouble knowing when it is time to give up anticipating what will happen and preparing for it knowing who a person is and what he is about before he says a word being able to solve a problem that no one else seems to know is a problem how to make sure you are being heard knowing what you can change and what you cannot recognizing how you are being perceived knowing if someone is lying knowing what someone is feeling knowing the right question to ask at any given moment sensing that something isn’t right figuring out a solution finding a better way Every day there is another dumb AI article; todayy in the NY Times: How Artificial Intelligence Can Save Your Life uh huh should have been "how thinking about flies can teach you about intelligence"
Always enjoy you commentary Roger. Unfiltered and to the point.
The "AI" in the NYT article could have been done with today's computer power combined with statistical techniques available in the 1960's. No real intelligence required.
Loved it!
this is a good list - it is going up on my refrigerator (sacred space)
A wise man once told me to time them like an arrow.
The other day my Tesla Model 3 calmly evaded a pickup that suddenly swerved into my lane. My fingers were tightening on the wheel to perform the maneuver but the car beat me to it by 1/10th of a second. Now that's some real AI.
Can't wait for the Dr.Schank's comments on The Times piece "A Machine May Not Take Your Job, but One Could Become Your Boss" (https://www.nytimes.com/2019/06/23/technology/artificial-intelligence-ai-workplace.html).
Roger. You are both brilliant and funny -- but that's not news. I love your list but take umbrage with the fifth one. Biases are the things we make up about people before we know who they really are. We judge people based on what we "think" we know about them based on many factors, but that is seldom their truth. It's also the reason why we have so many systems and structures in our country and world that benefit certain groups of people to the detriment of other people. To me, giving people a chance to reveal who they are and constantly checking our biases is not only a sign of traditional intelligence, it's a hallmark of emotional intelligence.
Crossreferenced your thoughts with the Microsoft AI Bible and nothing came up... intelligence simply can’t be artificial!

Most of these are a subset of "anticipating what will happen and preparing for it". This is how I explain to people the importance of Science and Technology. Otherwise you're just shooting in the dark.
