Have you researched yourself lately? A while back I was meeting with a potential client and one of the first things he said was “I guess you don’t represent Verizon.” It caught me off guard, I replied “No, I don’t. Why do you ask?” He didn’t hesitate to tell me he saw that I had gone on a Twitter rant about a service issue. Until that moment, I hadn’t fully realized the impact my social media rants could have on my business. I often speak about corporate crisis communications or image management, and I am surprised how many people consider their Facebook or Twitter posts as personal, and not public information. Before going out today you probably looked in the mirror. How’s the hair, any stuff in your teeth, etc. That’s not the image I’m focused on. In politics you always do opposition research to get info on your opponent. You also do a vulnerability study to find out what your opponent may find out about the principle. So, logic dictates, you should review your own profile to know what others, maybe an employer or client, will find. You don't need to hire your own private investigator, but when was the last time you took a moment to reflect how you appear online to others? If you haven’t done any research on yourself lately, maybe it’s time you do. #politickingpolitics
