The consensus in climate lobbying by Oil and Gas Trade Associations in the US is breaking. Over the past week we have seen major public interventions from Shell, Equinor, BP and ExxonMobil calling on the federal government to directly regulate methane emissions. This is a trend that is rapidly gaining pace as companies across a growing number of sectors are responding to investor requests to review the consistency of their trade association memberships. Shell are due to publish their review of lobbying and trade association membership before the end of the month. Investors are working across Europe, Australia and in the US to ensure companies are lobbying in alignment with the goals of the Paris Agreement and that what is said in public is also lobbied for in private. It’s an absolute prerequisite that investors on behalf of us, beneficiaries and plan members, and the next generation, mandate disclosure around key issues such as lobbying activities and spent across all controversial sectors and activities. And fortunately regulatory efforts (in the EU) are following suit. #NSFMNextGen
Investors have been hugely influential in pressing companies to ensure that their lobbying practices and processes, are aligned with their corporate policies on climate change (and that these policies are aligned with the goals of the Paris Agreement on Climate Change). The individuals named above - alongside the redoubtable and indefatigable @Adam Matthews - have been to the forefront of these efforts.
