I want to share my little experience:
During an IT Setup, consisting of a deploy of a campus network infrastructure I was supervising, I was provided with the configurations applied to each network device.
This morning, the company who took care of the staging of those devices, came on-site to install the infrastructure in the building.
I replicated the same topology on my private eve server, which consists of a freeware solution to emulate networks and interact with single devices from physical layer all the way up to the application layer.
By doing so, executing some reachability tcl scripts, I was able to quickly find some minor problems and troubleshoot them while the field engineers were still installing.
Once the network infrastructure was ready, I was able to apply little patches where needed. This saved me a lot of time, preventing me from moving around from a Rack to another in search of those misconfigs.
So my tip is, if you’re involved in any configuration or deployment task, invest some time bringing up a VM for a platform that can help you simulate the infrastructure virtually. It made the difference to me today.
I personally use https://www.eve-ng.net/ but many more free alternatives are present in the wild.
