I think another related problem is that many design firms and agencies don't see the full value in good marketing. They just feel "we have great work, people will come to us."

This is great. The art of persuasion and influence is lacking everywhere. I just met with a team here who thinks they can launch a product without doing anything to influence people. I just don't get why people think an idea will find an audience.

Thanks Paul, this is so true. My guess is it transcends design agencies and applies to pretty much any professional.
