The technology won’t save you. In 2023 organisations will invest money in AI, VR and microlearning - just as they invested in elearning and learning management systems two decades previously. And once again they will struggle to demonstrate a return. New technology applied to old thinking is not progress; if your organisation is stuck at level 1 maturity (education), more technology won’t help. The problem with pushing content is not that we aren’t doing it efficiently - it’s that it isn’t effective. Instead, why not design resources that help people with the challenges they have today, and challenges that will help them develop for tomorrow? Very sad to hear that Roger Schank died at the end of last month. His Wikipedia entry is impressive - cataloguing his contributions to learning, cognitive science and AI - and I am proud to remember him as a friend. As a young psychology lecturer I taught his stuff on scripts & stories, some years later I got to work with him whilst at BP - trying to get safety people to tell tales rather than dump content. We met many times. He was never afraid to make a ruckus. He wrote the foreword to the first edition of How People Learn, and three years ago we shot a bunch of short videos with the help of Nick Welch. Here's one of them. Around the world companies are spending almost $400 billion dollars on training, annually, with very little evidence that any of it is effective. The root of the problem is that they are doing education, not learning - pushing content at people in the hope it will change their behaviour, rather than designing resources that help them with the job or experiences that help them grow. Be more human. Have you ever had that experience where you've worked with someone for a while, but not really got to know them until you met outside work? Why is that? At work we talk & act in weird, formal ways that prevent us being ourselves... showing that we care.... developing connections. Instead we 'cosplay' business people with scripted, jargon-filled set pieces that enforce conformity. This damages our wellbeing and our engagement. It doesn't have to be that way.
