Worried about your child's education? Nick Shackleton-Jones and Roger Schank debate teachers, schools and maths in part 2 - 'What's wrong with the education system?'#education #learning #insights recap Part 1 here: https://lnkd.in/eBGxy9t Part 2 quotes: “Can we just talk about what they care about.” “I don’t feel sorry for teachers - they know what they were getting into.” “School is an intentional place of indoctrination.” ”Map people’s concerns when they come into the system.” “You support them in the directions they want to take.”
Yes education system of the past where we mass produced automated students who spokenin cue and wrote on cue must be challenged But we need to have a really hard look at our society and all the structures that are also of a bygone era that continue to hold the society together . Schools simply mirror our needs and beliefs . So the industry and the society must inform educators of their expectations before the reforms can begin
Nick Shackleton-Jones The modern education system is the very definition of lunacy as you have so clearly demonstrated. It is the primary reason for the rapid increase in home schooling in the UK. You are probably aware of this popular youtube video on the same topic. I found it to also be a very powerful indictment of the education system. https://youtu.be/dqTTojTija8
Use the concerns (née passions?) a pupil has as the channel through which they can engage and learn a broader spectrum of subjects that they would otherwise not be attracted to. My 3 year old loves art but I can’t get her to sit still and spell her name (expecting too much!?) unless I make it into an artful activity..
Thanks, one of the best conversations about education I've heard in a long time. Teachers believe they teach. Students learn. These processes are not necessarily connected.
Hi again! I'm agree with Nick : a lot of teachers comes in with intention of doing well... And loose their faith after some years of practice. BUT.... it's changing from inside! I've been trained a lot in creativity field and I'm meeting more and more teachers that want to change their mission. Watch absolutely a movie sponsored by Ashoka. You can see some on : http://alternatives.blog.lemonde.fr/2017/03/07/pedagogies-alternatives-trois-documentaires-pour-y-voir-clair/ Eager to watch Part 3! And Roger, as a Canadian/Québecer (and now European) as your wife and an architect good in maths (yes women cab be!!!), we have to meet each other some day! 🇨🇦
Nick Shackleton-Jones... I have also been debating this.. I will PM you some report I wrote last year when working as a consultant on a project.
Thanks for a thought-provoking discussion!
Sorry Roger got to disagree with you here... I feel sorry for the teachers going in, most teachers want to break the system and they go in under this false idea that they can... hell even I debated it. The problem is this you have two teacher both teaching the same dull useless subject for this example let’s use geography...one teacher does it by the book talking at the kid making them fill in their books the standard process. The other teacher decides to make it more experience based maybe changing the environment taking them to the told cutting trees in half to see the age rings... However at the end of the year both teachers fail and one has to be for the chop... the school system will always pick the person who did it by the book to stay and the one who tried something for the chop... The school system zaps our children of their creativity then zaps our new teacher going in if their freedom. Every now and again you will see a something like educating Yorkshire that promote fake hope to our new teacher thinking they can make the change. So I do feel sorry for our new teacher because fundamental most go in wanting to make the change and break the system if it ridged business like take on things!
Thanks Nick Welch ! Look forward to the debate 😊
