Some people think having kids will negatively impact their careers. My experience has been just the opposite. Before I had kids, I worked more, but I learned that more work ≠ more success. Working smarter = more success. Around 1999, a VP from Oracle, Matt Mosman, spoke at BYU where I was a student. After his talk I went up and I asked him about his work schedule, and he said he left work every day at 5 pm and dedicated his nights and weekends to his family.  I asked him how in the world he could do that and get his work done and be as successful as he had been. He said when he was at work, he focused on work–he didn't waste time. Soon after I started my business and ignored Matt's advice for the next eight years. I worked 100 hour weeks, and rarely spent time with my wife. Thankfully she stuck with me. By 2007 I wised up, and when we had kids I made a commitment to not repeat my mistake, even if it hurt my business.  But it didn't hurt my business, it helped it. When I thought I had unlimited time to work, I wasted a lot of time. When I had kids, it drove it home for me that I had limited time, so I got focused and worked smarter. And since then, my business has done much, MUCH better. What about you? Has family gotten in the way of your career, or helped it?

My kids have enriched my life and made it that much better. Now, I am learning a lesson about being more efficient and focusing on work when it's work time. I have figured out that I need to create blocks of time say 2 hours, and achieve what I need to achieve in 2 hours. It's a shortened deadline and it forces me to focus on what I need to do with laser precision. Not to mention, my wife has helped me with that too. I was consumed into the work more = more success ideology and it nearly caused me to burnout. She is smart and I am smart to follow her advice and thoughts.

Having a hard stop on your time definitely makes you more efficient. And also more effective! That means doing the RIGHT things, not just doing some things faster. The other reason I think kids makes you more productive is that they give you more of a reason to succeed. Now you have some other human(s) who are counting on you for their survival. That's a pretty good motivator ;)

I have always had to travel a fair bit for my first company. I never enjoyed being away much and was lucky enough to take the children and partner with me as much as I could. Much more pleasurable.

There were times I wished I'd not worked so hard, especially being a single mum but at the end of the day I always tucked them in, gave them a good night kiss and was there to have breakfast with them. Giving up corporate life to work on my own twenty years ago ensured I was there for them even more and having a super supportive husband who balanced us out was gold. #familymatters

Having family priorities and commitments has made me more disciplined with the finite time I have to work. I'm smarter about where to focus and how much time I can take to do it. Focusing on my family forces me to say no more often as well, which has been a fantastic focusing function as well.

I took a position in a division of Priceline.com a year and a half ago and found what I thought was my "dream job". I travelled a lot due to the majority of my partners based in the US east coast. Having a 3 and 4 year old at the time, I had to make the call to resign. It was hard and I admit I was devestated leaving. In the moment, I could say my family got in the way of my success as negative as that sounds. Instead, I entered startup world as an entrepreneur for my family and to drive success in my own way. Those little girls are my driving force to succeed. I may age quickly in the process - ha!
