This “plantscraper” will be called The World Food Building, and all of its plants will be grown hydroponically — meaning the produce grown in the skyscraper’s farms will take root in a nutrient-rich, water-based solution without any soil. To allow for optimum success, this growth will be controlled almost entirely autonomously: everything from water to nutrition, sunlight, temperature, and air quality will be measured and controlled autonomously through a complex system.

Move Over, Skyscrapers. This "Plantscraper" Can Feed 5,000 a Year.

oh man... this is either designed by folks with absolutely no experience in agriculture/horticulture, or it is simply a scam. Environmentally and financially, this would be one of the absolute worst ways to grow food.

I like the term "plantscraper", it sums up all the positive aspects of this project and the potential of this new type of buildings. I would also add that there are various studies proving that the contact with "green" and nature helps relieving stress and can increase productivity.

"We launched the Flex Fund in 2010, just after the financial market had crashed. In #Vermont, we had a lot of innovative businesses in the #foodsystem, #forestry, and #cleantechnology sectors that couldn’t get #growthfinancing — neither #debt nor #equity. The financial crisis had pretty much cut them off from #growthcapital. Some of those companies didn’t have hard assets, so they weren’t ever going to be bankable, at least not in the short term. So, at the time, we saw an opportunity to help fund the growth of these interesting companies that were core to Vermont’s economy but didn’t have access to growth capital."
