In May, Engine No. 1 convinced some of ExxonMobil’s largest shareholders to embrace a new direction for the company. Now the team has its sights set on bringing retail investors into its mission of creating sustainable long-term value, and is launching the Engine No. 1 Transform 500 ETF. Betterment, the largest independent digital investment advisor, will be integrating the fund into all of its socially responsible investing strategies.
The Transform 500 ETF tracks a market cap-weighted index of the 500 largest U.S. stocks, but differentiates itself by seeking to instigate positive change for stakeholders through proxy voting and “active ownership” - votes we cast, campaigns we run, and the investors we bring with us. Betterment will be making the fund available to retail investors, 401(k) plan participants, and advisory firms through its SRI strategies.
JUST Capital CEO Martin Whittaker will join Engine No. 1’s ETF leads, Michael O’Leary and Yasmin Dahya Bilger, and Betterment’s SVP of Operations, Boris Khentov to explore how Engine No. 1 plans on engaging America’s largest corporations, why Betterment decided it was a great fit for their customers, and how the project fits into the larger discussion over the future of American capitalism.
