This Black History Month, we're proud to reaffirm our commitment to addressing the stark health disparities in prostate cancer care. The statistics are clear and concerning: The statistics are clear and concerning: Black men have a 70% higher diagnosis rate and are more than twice as likely to die from prostate cancer. This applies to anyone with a prostate within this high-risk group. Our mission is unwavering: to ensure that race, location, or financial status never determines a person's chances of surviving prostate cancer. We draw inspiration from groundbreaking Black pioneers in medicine like Dr. Charles Drew, Dr. Jane Cooke Wright, and Henrietta Lacks, whose contributions continue to shape modern healthcare. BREAKING: Landmark Legislation Introduced to Expand Prostate Cancer Screening Access U.S. Senators Cory Booker (D-NJ) and John Boozman (R-AR) have introduced the bipartisan PSA Screening for HIM Act (S. 297), marking a significant milestone in prostate cancer prevention. This crucial legislation would mandate private health insurance coverage for prostate cancer screenings without cost-sharing requirements for high-risk men. The statistics are clear: 🔹 Prostate cancer affects 1 in 8 American men 🔹 Black men face double the mortality rate 🔹 Early detection leads to nearly 100% survival rates 🔹 Family history doubles diagnosis risk As our CEO, Courtney Bugler, CFRE, notes, "This Act represents a critical step forward in protecting men's health and saving lives through early detection." This bipartisan effort, supported by the American Urological Association, American Cancer Society, and Prostate Health Education Network, could revolutionize access to life-saving screenings. We have some amazing advocates of all ages. 💙🩵
Some days (okay, many days. Most days?) being my best self at work is in tension with being my best self at home. This was not one of those days. The stars aligned and ZERO Prostate Cancer’s prostate cancer screening bill in the VA General Assembly was on the docket for a hearing on MLK Day, so I brought my two biggest kids/littlest lobbyists to Richmond to see democracy in action. After 3 hours of waiting through other bills, playing hangman, and whispering, “how much longer until you get to talk,” our bill was up. Aaaand the committee chair moved to quickly report the bill out of committee, with a unanimous vote and no time for testimony. A win for my work self, but a bummer for the people whose only real interest in the activity was seeing their mama on the big screen at the front of the room, saying the words they had critiqued and practiced in the car. It wasn’t exactly the day I had planned, in fact, I’m told it was “so boring,” but it gave me so much joy. I was great at my job (our bill was reported out of committee in both chambers, and, fingers crossed, it’s smooth sailing) and I was a great parent (they learned some things about prostate cancer, workers compensation policy, and rest, water, and shade breaks) - at the same time. This was a really good day.
