Smarter Labs, Faster Drugs: Key Takeaways on Lab Digitalization & Automation to Enable AI-driven Drug Development Last week, we were delighted to host digital pioneers from over 15 companies in the pharma and Labtech sectors at an engaging Thin[gk]athon on the challenges and potential solutions to drive lab digitalization and automation. Two inspiring keynotes by Tom Kissling and Anders Lindh set the stage for highly constructive discussions within our four working groups, with diverse and sometimes controversial perspectives from pharma users and lab technology suppliers. Here are some key takeaways: 🔷 Standardization is Key: - Pharma sees high value in interoperability and data standards to enable connectivity, FAIR data outputs, and new AI models. - Labtech manufacturers support standards but often wait for users to define them. 🔷 Common Ideas from the Working Groups: - Open Data & Interoperability: Users should align on internal and cross-industry standards, while manufacturers form alliances to harmonize data formats for non-competing workflows. - Collaboration & AI Governance: Users should engage regulatory bodies to discuss AI/ML guidance in pharma R&D. Manufacturers should move from single-instrument views to cross-vendor, plug-and-play solutions. - Empowering People and Drive Change: Lab Digitalization and Automation mean change à Involve key decision-makers early and highlight the risks of not automating lab workflows. - Incentives & Contracts: Users should include interoperability and data standards as mandatory criteria in tenders and supplier programs. - AI Models: Train models on proprietary data to ensure accountability, quality, and reproducibility. The Volkswagen Group continues to be a pioneer in shop floor digitization. With cloud technology from Amazon Web Services (AWS), a foundation has been laid for the widespread use of artificial intelligence and state-of-the-art IT systems in its plants. ZEISS Digital Innovation had the privilege of contributing to VW's digital shop floor management. Following a successful pilot phase, 43 factories worldwide are now connected to the Digital Production Platform (DPP). Five years into the initiative, the results speak for themselves: the project has proven to be a resounding success. 📢 Level IT up ist in Dresden erfolgreich gestartet! Vergangenen Freitag war es endlich so weit: Unser neues Format Level IT up feierte Premiere – und das mit großem Erfolg! 🎉 Ein herzliches Dankeschön an alle teilnehmenden Schülerinnen und Schüler, an das Team der ZEISS Digital Innovation für die reibungslose Organisation und die inspirierende Atmosphäre für den kommenden Nachwuchs und an alle Partnerunternehmen, die Stadt Dresden, den Schulen, Medien und Unterstützenden, die das Pilotprojekt groß gemacht haben. Besonders begeistert haben wir den Nachwuchs mit unseren interaktiven Workshops: 🧠 „Out-of-the-box-Thinking und Teamarbeit mit Hilfe von Black Stories“ 🧱 „Spielerischer Einstieg in den Softwareentwicklungsprozess mit LEGO“ Beide Sessions boten praxisnahe Impulse und wurden von den Schülerinnen und Schülern sehr geschätzt. Es war großartig zu sehen, wie viele Ideen in kurzer Zeit entwickelt wurden und vor allem wie viel Vorwissen teils bekannt war. Die leuchtenden Augen sowie Interesse auch für 2026 bestärken uns für diesen neuen Aktionstag in Dresden. Level IT up 𝗶𝗻 𝗭𝗮𝗵𝗹𝗲𝗻 💚 204 Anmeldungen für 24 Workshops 💚 94 % der angemeldeten Schüler*innen waren da 💚 76 % der Teilnehmenden kamen von Gymnasien, 22 % von Oberschulen, plus je 1 Teilnehmer aus Berufsschule & Fachoberschule 𝗪𝗶𝗲 𝗵𝗮𝗯𝗲𝗻 𝗱𝗶𝗲 𝗦𝗰𝗵ü𝗹𝗲𝗿:𝗶𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗻 𝘃𝗼𝗺 𝗘𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗲𝗿𝗳𝗮𝗵𝗿𝗲𝗻? 💡55 % über ihre Eltern 💡21 % durch Aushänge und die Kommunikation in der Schule 💡10 % über Schulfreund:innen Diese Einblicke zeigen: Eltern spielen eine zentrale Rolle in der Berufsorientierung – und Schulen bleiben sehr wichtige Multiplikatoren. Einzelne Eltern wären auch gern bei uns geblieben und staunten über das Feedback nach den Workshops.
