When you’re inventing new materials and optics, there’s no catalog to order from.   Here’s how R&D spending typically looks in a growth-stage company like ours.️    At this stage, we’re still investing heavily in CapEx — expanding labs, equipment and infrastructure. But OpEx is now the bigger part of the picture, and it will keep growing as we shift toward more research, engineering and scaling.   Building deep tech isn’t fast. Yesterday at DFF 2025, we announced something important for XPANCEO’s next chapter: our Scientific Advisory Board — a group of 11 world-class researchers chaired by Sir Konstantin Novoselov, Nobel laureate and co-discoverer of graphene. His work opened the entire field of 2D materials — the foundation of ultra-thin electronics and flexible photonics. Having him guide our scientific direction is both an honor and a responsibility.  Building an invisible, weightless smart contact lens is not a single-discipline problem. It requires materials science, nanophotonics, micro-optics, biosensing, energy storage, biocompatibility, and optics engineering to work together in perfect sync.  That’s why the Board brings together the people who pioneered many of the fields we rely on — the researchers who proved that atom-thin conductors, flexible photonic circuits, and transparent electronics are not science fiction.  They give us guidance on our journey: scientific review, experimental strategy, long-term risk analysis, helping us transform research breakthroughs into a safe, commercially viable product.  For us, this step is simple: If you want to build a new interface for human–computer interaction, you need the best people in the world advising you. XPANCEO is joining the Dubai Future Forum on November 18–19, organized by the DUBAI FUTURE FOUNDATION. As long-time partners of DFF, we’re glad to join the world’s largest gathering of futurists with a working preview of the future we’re building.   We begin today, on November 17, with the Foresight & Wearable Technologies Symposium, where we’ll focus on real science: the materials, optical architectures, and photonics breakthroughs that are changing the wearable market right here and right now.   And on November 18–19, we’ll be hosting a few activation space events:  • How Graphene Is Made — with Nobel Laureate Sir Konstantin Novoselov   A live demonstration of graphene deposition and an introduction to the discovery that opened the field of atom-thin materials. Visitors will leave with a sample plate — a tangible piece of the material that unlocked an entire class of ultra-thin electronics.  • Nanoparticles Area   Here you can “test drive” pens filled with inks infused with 2D nanoparticles — a million times thinner than a human hair.  • XPANCEO’s Prototypes   At our booth, visitors can explore lenses that blend vision correction, AR, and health monitoring — all in one. Highlights include ultra-compact companion devices, microbattery-powered lenses, AR-enabled holographic designs, color-enhancement via nanoparticles, health-tracking tear sensors, and transparent 2D-electronic conductors.  • Grapheal’s Prototypes   Graphene-based flexible sensors that replace rigid silicon with biocompatible, transparent films — pointing toward the next generation of medical diagnostics, environmental monitoring, and printed electronics.  DFF remains one of the few global spaces where the future isn’t reduced to buzzwords. A new Forbes deep dive by Charlie Fink offers one of the clearest and most comprehensive looks at XPANCEO’s work to date.  The article traces our path from the original idea of building a habitat for intelligence to the methodical engineering behind more than twenty-five prototypes — displays, biosensors, power, and advanced materials — all converging into a smart contact lens designed to become the natural interface for AI-powered XR computing (spoiler: mark early 2027 on your calendars).  As Charlie writes, it’s “a possible next chapter in computing where AI moves off the desktop, out of the cloud, and into the sensory field of the human eye.”  This is the long game we’re committed to: merging optics, photonics, biosensing, and AI into a seamless layer of perception. We made it on BBC Science Focus’s list of the six most mind-bending innovations at GITEX.  Huge thanks to Tom Howarth for the great reporting and that slight touch of humor.  Our smart contact lenses might look “straight out of a spy movie,” but they’re designed for regular people and ambitious early adopters — yes, both.  But the ultimate goal is building the ultimate interface for AI-powered XR computing — one that merges all gadgets into a single contact lens and, as BBC put it, “could make smart glasses look old-fashioned in the not-so-distant future.” So, what once belonged to sci-fi or superhero movies is finally taking shape in our lab.  Give it a read — it’s a great overview.
