“During a disaster event, insurers need to understand what properties are at risk. With Bellwether…it’s a game changer.” – Catherine Tillyard, McGill and Partners. X’s Bellwether team worked with Google Research and Google DeepMind to help insurers better understand hurricane behavior. Bellwether developed a model that can predict the likelihood of whether buildings will be damaged during an impending hurricane—up to 15 days before the storm hits. Bellwether is now collaborating with McGill and Partners to help its insurance clients pay claims faster, so homeowners can rebuild sooner in the wake of a natural disaster. Moonshot taking is not always glamorous. I often post updates from speaking events, nice meetings, and the amazing progress our team is making. However, my work on Materra is not always like this. It’s a moonshot project focused on trash after all. Even though we’re taking on global challenges using frontier technologies, our team regularly gets our hands dirty, so we can learn, train and test our technologies. Sometimes this is fun, sometimes it is hard, and like this video, sometimes it is gross (and funny). No matter what it is, it helps our moonshot progress. Enjoy a laugh, at my expense, and hopefully appreciate that this is actually what moonshot taking is like. What does it actually mean to take a moonshot? Helen Riley (HBS ’01), COO + CFO at Google’s X, The Moonshot Factory, shares the three-part blueprint her team uses to turn sci-fi ideas into world-changing ventures: 1. Identify a massive global problem. 2. Dream up a radical solution that feels impossible. 3. Invent the breakthrough tech to make it real. This is how innovation at scale begins — with courage, clarity, and just enough belief to chase the impossible. The Harvard Innovation Labs recently hosted a fireside chat with Riley and her X colleague — John "Ivo" Stivoric, VP and Lt. Trouble + Maker — moderated by Harvard Business School Senior Lecturer Allison Mnookin. Watch the full conversation: https://lnkd.in/gKjQPtyW

🔌💡 Tapestry is working with four of New Zealand’s largest energy distributors to help improve grid reliability and reduce outages. In a first-of-its-kind collaboration, Northpower, Orion NZ Ltd, Unison Networks and WEL Networks will use Tapestry to transform how they inspect and maintain their grids. Using Tapestry’s AI, computer vision, and machine learning tools, they’ll be able to more quickly identify equipment that may be defective or nearing its end of life, while also gaining new insights into the grids they operate. By pooling their data, the hope is that consortium members will be able to reduce outages in the communities they serve. Learn more: https://lnkd.in/gTybR9jr #TapestryEnergy

Houston we have an opportunity! Our team had a blast in Houston a few weeks back visiting Rice University and attending Afrotech. Thanks to Reginald DesRoches and his team for hosting such an inspiring day. We loved meeting some of the researchers, scientists and entrepreneurs who are advancing discovery and innovation. Big thanks also to the team at AFROTECH and Jeff Nelson for hosting a great conversation about innovation with Astro Teller and to everyone who came to our moonshot mixer. We look forward to continuing to shoot for the moon together!

What if waste is a resource we just don’t understand yet? Materra, X’s moonshot for circularity, is developing breakthrough tools to help society move from waste management to a true circular economy. The team has created technology that identifies waste at the molecular level — starting with plastics. By understanding waste at the molecular level the team hopes to unlock recycling and circularity on a much larger scale. Learn more: Tune into the Moonshot Podcast, Episode 6: Trash to Treasure, this National Recycling Day. https://lnkd.in/g-8Ca-G5 #NationalRecyclingDay
