Which economies are the world’s innovation leaders? Switzerland, Sweden, the US, the Republic of Korea and Singapore top WIPO’s Global Innovation Index (GII) ranking, followed by the UK, Finland, the Netherlands, Denmark and China which breaks into the top 10 for the first time. The GII also finds that while global innovation is facing headwinds, it isn’t standing still – new breakthroughs are reaching people around the world. Ranking the innovation performance of nearly 140 economies, the GII is built on a rich dataset – a collection of 78 indicators – and has become a cornerstone of economic policymaking across the globe. From mind to market: Through knowledge and technology transfer, scientific findings, knowledge and intellectual property flow from creators, such as universities and research institutions, to public and private users of new products and services. A new WIPO program equips tech transfer practitioners in ASEAN member states with the skills, tools, and expert guidance needed to bring research-based technologies to the market. Organized in collaboration with The ASEAN Secretariat, and supported by the Republic of Korea Fund-in-Trust for Industrial Property, the 9-month program is open to mid-level technology transfer staff and innovation practitioners in ASEAN universities or public R&D institutions. The 2025 edition of WIPO's Global Innovation Index ranks the innovation performance of nearly 140 economies worldwide and explores how ideas emerge, spread, and scale in a rapidly changing world. The GII 2025 found that Switzerland, Sweden, the United States, the Republic of Korea, and Singapore are the world’s most innovative economies, and that a group of middle-income economies – led by China, India, Türkiye, Viet Nam, the Philippines, Indonesia, and Morocco – continue their climb in the GII. This year’s edition also shows that while investment in research and innovation is losing steam, global innovation isn’t standing still – new breakthroughs are reaching people around the world. WIPO Director General Daren Tang visited the United States, where he met members of the Intellectual Property Owners Association (IPO) as well as other stakeholders from the country’s intellectual property community. During the visit, Mr. Tang delivered a keynote address at the IPO Annual Meeting in San Diego, and also visited Qualcomm, the largest US user of WIPO’s Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) System, the University of California San Diego, and local San Diego companies. Curtains that double as solar panels. In Türkiye, engineer Ahmet Fuat Yalçın created curtains equipped with solar panels that produce renewable energy. By turning windows into vertical solar farms, his innovation offers a smart alternative to traditional rooftop panels, combining everyday comfort with sustainable energy generation. Solar Curtain is among the technologies being showcased at the İstanbul International Inventions Fair (September 17-21, 2025), where creators, entrepreneurs and innovators from around the world will present ideas shaping the future. WIPO Director General Daren Tang visited Algeria for a series of high-level engagements aimed at strengthening the country’s innovation ecosystem and supporting national development goals. During the visit, Mr. Tang met with Acting Prime Minister Sifi Ghrieb and other cabinet members including the Foreign Minister and the Minister of Culture and Arts, pledging WIPO support to empower the next generation of innovators and creators through intellectual property-backed innovation.
