Our Santiago-based Chartering Manager Jorge Dittrich recently visited Chile's Puerto Talcahuano where our Trip TC vessel MV Es Integrity loaded steel billets and scrap destined for Peru. Western Bulk has a long tradition of doing coastal trades on the West Coast of South America. Coastal shipping presents a cost-effective solution for transporting goods within a region. Last week we celebrated that we finally shut down our very last on-premises server! Moving to the cloud has been one of the goals for Western Bulk since 2017, as it has significantly increased our data security and lowered cost related to physical servers. The AWS cloud has also enabled integrations between systems, contributed to our data driven approach to decision making - like quantitative trading - and helped the creation of new innovations like our AI tool for reading contracts. #shipping #maritime #shipsandshipping #data #cloud #aws

We are pleased to introduce our two newly elected board members – Betina Nygaard and Ulrika Laurin. Betina Nygaard has more than 20 years’ experience within SaaS software and supply chain processes of which 16 years were served as the CEO of Scanmarket. She currently works as a senior advisor and professional board member focused on M&A, PMI, growth, digitalization, and internationalization. She also serves as Chairman of the Board of Valified and Mileage Book, and a member of the board of Semine, EasyTranslate and Faqtum MA. Ulrika Laurin has a career spanning over 25 years in the maritime industry. She currently works as a strategic advisor and serves as an independent board member of Wilh. Wilhelmsen Holding ASA and Stainless Tankers ASA. She also volunteers as Chair of the Human Rights Watch Stockholm Committee. Previously, Laurin has served as CEO and CFO of Anglo-Atlantic Steamship Co. Ltd. She has also served as a board member of Golden Ocean Group Ltd, Frontline Ltd, Stena Bulk AB and Concordia Maritime AB. Their combined perspectives will be a great asset for Western Bulk as we continue to grow and develop as a company. Japan is one of the most important markets for Western Bulk in terms of both cargo and tonnage. Being able to experience in real life the loading ports that we are dealing with every single day is of great value to our commercial personnel - not only the berths’ locations, but also the infrastructure and cargo logistics on site.   Recently, our Chartering Manager Moire Hammer went to South Africa and Mozambique to see the ports Coega, Port Elizabeth, Durban and Maputo - where Western Bulk loads manganese ore and coal shipments on a regular basis - and to visit our local port agents. She was able to experience the weather challenges on land and sea that we always hear about, and also challenges related to the coordination of cargo transport into the ports' facilities. So far in 2024, Western Bulk has bunkered in more than 150 different ports worldwide, with Singapore accounting for the largest share - about 15% of our annual purchases. Last week, our trainees Haziq Danish, Maximilian Finn Dethloff and Theodor Hagen visited the panamax vessel Crimson Ace as she was bunkering from TFG Marine in Singapore. During the visit, they got the opportunity to participate in several key operations, including bunkering, a crew change and an underwater inspection by scuba divers. The trainees also got to observe a bunker survey, where they had the opportunity to engage with the surveyor to learn more about the process. The visit concluded with a lunch hosted by the captain, which was a nice occasion to further discuss the operational procedures they had witnessed in more detail.
