DOC staff give back to their communities in a number of different ways. Recently, several members of our Port Angeles and Port Hadlock community corrections field offices participated in the Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics, running with other law enforcement agencies for a combined 37 miles with the Flame of Hope and raising more than $5,000 for Special Olympics Washington. We're proud of our committed staff who contribute to the success of their communities as well as those in their care.

Improving public safety by positively changing lives.
Info
The Department of Corrections (DOC) is Washington’s second-largest human service agency. We maintain approximately 9,400 FTEs. Our strategic priorities guide our department’s direction and decision-making. Everything we do is geared toward creating safer communities. DOC promotes public safety, teaches personal responsibility and accountability, treats incarcerated individuals fairly and equitably, promotes a positive work ethic by providing incarcerated individuals opportunities for self-improvement and provides for restitution. DOC operates 11 prisons, 13 reentry centers (formerly referred to as work releases) and 86 community field offices. These facilities serve and support 13,800 incarcerated individuals, 13,000 individuals under court-ordered supervision and an additional 900 people in partial confinement.

Through our Washington Way program, we're transforming the culture within our prisons by empowering correctional staff to engage more actively with incarcerated individuals. This helps to create opportunities for meaningful change in their lives. Cedar Creek Corrections Center hosted a cornhole tournament, where teams made up of one staff member and one incarcerated individual competed in a bracket-style competition. This friendly competition built rapport among the players and spectators while fostering an environment of support and rehabilitation. Our People: The Heart of Our Mission. Corrections work takes many forms, and each person plays a vital role in keeping our facilities and communities safe, supporting rehabilitation, and making a difference in people’s lives. Governor Bob Ferguson proclaimed May 2025 as Correctional Officers and Employees Appreciation Month, celebrating the valuable contributions of corrections workers across the state – from DOC to county, city, Tribal, and juvenile facilities. Today, and every day, we celebrate you.

To help prepare incarcerated individuals for employment once released, we offer a variety of career training programs in our prisons. Eight women at the Washington Corrections Center for Women recently successfully completed the Trades Related Apprenticeship Coaching (TRAC) program, where they received 460 hours of theoretical and practical instruction to prepare them for competitive eligibility within various union trade apprenticeship programs. This program gives them connections in the community with local unions to create potential landing spots for employment.
