About us
The St. Louis District, which encompasses 28,000 square miles and is almost equally divided between Missouri and Illinois, is an engineering and water resource agency dedicated to maintaining a proper and healthy balance of the varying uses of the heartland's waterways. We support the needs of the community and the environment through many civil works missions. To fight the devastating effects of floods, 87 levees (totaling 750 miles in length) constructed to protect 575,000 acres of economic and agricultural interests in the region. To ensure the safe passage of commerce on our waterways, we also maintain a Congress-mandated nine-foot navigation channel on 300 miles of the Middle Mississippi River, 80 miles of the lower Illinois River and 36 miles of the Kaskaskia River. This is accomplished through several different types of river engineering practices, including locks and dams, which maintain a pool at a depth necessary to meet navigation requirements, while still fulfilling the needs of the environment. The St. Louis District also operates and maintains five lakes and their associated recreational areas. These lakes, which serve a variety of purposes ranging from flood protection and recreation to potable water supply and hydroelectricity, average over 15 million visitors a year. Other missions include environmental restoration, environmental river engineering (created by the St. Louis District), water supply, emergency responses to natural disasters, regulatory oversight (issuance of permits and wetland delineation), hydropower, recreation, Ordinance and Explosive Waste Program, and clean up hazardous and toxic waste material connected to Department of Energy activities in the 1940s-1960s. Park rangers at Rend Lake recently teamed up with young campers to talk about water safety and how to stay safe while having fun at the lake. Learning how to stay safe on and around the water helps everyone enjoy the lake responsibly. Remember: Learn to swim well and always wear your life jacket when on or near water. #PleaseWearIt

For the first time ever, youth hunters will have the chance to experience a managed deer hunt at the Riverlands Migratory Bird Sanctuary in West Alton, Mo. On Nov. 1 – 2, the St. Louis District’s Rivers Project will welcome five youth hunters (ages 6 – 15), each accompanied by a non-hunting adult, for this special opportunity. Participants will be randomly selected from applications due Sept. 15. “This hunt is part of our Riverlands Deer Management Plan to address over-population within the Sanctuary. We look forward to extending this opportunity to youth within our community and appreciate the understanding of visitors during this temporary closure,” said Tyler Goble, team lead wildlife biologist. Recently, the Kaskaskia River Project hosted an Industry Day with partners and stakeholders to highlight ongoing collaboration to address backlog maintenance needs, the transition from Level of Service II to Level I, and efforts to maintain reliable navigation. Attendees toured the Jerry F. Costello Lock and Dam to see updates on miter gate machinery and tainter gate repairs, as well as hear outlooks on dredging and future operations. This unique project is managed through a partnership among the State of Illinois, the Kaskaskia Regional Port District, and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, with each playing a vital role in its continued success.
