Over 700,000 children were affected after Hurricane Melissa slammed the Caribbean. The strong storm that directly hit Jamaica and Cuba and affected the Caribbean islands of Haiti and the Dominican Republic has left a heavy toll of displaced children and families. Infrastructure has been left broken, crops destroyed, and essential services such as health and education have been disrupted. UNICEF teams are on the ground, supporting national authorities and partners in the affected countries to identify and quickly address the most urgent needs. https://lnkd.in/euveGEbv

Last week, I visited Haiti and witnessed one of the most complex humanitarian crises in the world. I spoke with teachers who continue to hold classes in makeshift shelters, doctors working with the bare minimum, and families who insist their children continue their education despite the challenges. I also met young people who are helping identify cases of malnutrition, connecting families to basic social services, and raising awareness about hygiene practices to help stop the spread of cholera. Haitians embody hope. However, Haiti is at a breaking point. The future of an entire generation is at stake. We cannot allow Haiti’s children to remain invisible or forgotten. Al menos 1,6 millones de niños y niñas en riesgo ante el paso del #HuracánMelissa por el Caribe. Se prevé que países como Jamaica, República Dominicana, Haití y Cuba experimenten varios días de condiciones meteorológicas intensas que podrían interrumpir los servicios básicos, especialmente en las zonas costeras vulnerables. “Todos los esfuerzos de preparación para la llegada de un huracán son vitales para mitigar los daños y la pérdida de vidas en las comunidades más vulnerables, especialmente en regiones como el Caribe. Las islas pequeñas siempre enfrentan una mayor vulnerabilidad a los fenómenos climáticos extremos” - Roberto Benes. Every time I hear that young people are the future of our societies, I can’t help but think that they’re already shaping the present. The future we aspire to depends on how we value their leadership, amplify their voices, and truly listen to what they have to say. Young people are not just tomorrow’s changemakers; they are today’s innovators, creators and problem-solvers. Their courage and insight must be at the centre of everything we do. It was an honour to meet an inspiring group of U-Reporters from Haiti, a dynamic community driving social change through their advocacy on education, health, protection and resilience. For UNICEF, U-Report is far more than a communication tool, it’s a movement for civic participation and accountability. That’s why we’re expanding partnerships with mobile operators, media, technology leaders and influencers to reach even more young people, especially in rural and underserved areas. My conversation with them was a chance to listen, learn, and co-create priorities that UNICEF Haiti will champion with government, donors and regional partners — ensuring that youth voices shape the policies that affect their lives.
