UNICEF is a leading advocate for children. With a strong presence in SA, we work to improve the life of every child.
About us
With a strong presence in South Africa, UNICEF is a leading advocate for children. We have the global authority to influence decision-makers and the variety of partners at the grassroots level to turn the most innovative ideas into reality. We believe that nurturing and caring for children are the cornerstones of human progress. UNICEF was created with this purpose in mind - to work with others to overcome the obstacles that poverty, violence, disease and discrimination place in a child's path. UNICEF upholds the Convention of the Rights of the Child. We work to assure equality for those who are discriminated against, girls and women in particular. We work for the Millennium Development Goals and for the progress promised in the United Nations Charter. We strive for peace and security, and work to hold everyone accountable to the promises made for children.

When children’s voices are heard, communities become stronger, and policy becomes more effective. On Thursday, UNICEF South Africa witnessed and supported children at the 2025 Nelson Mandela Children’s Parliament, which focused on amplifying the voices of children in planning and budgeting processes. We're proud to support the Nelson Mandela Children’s Parliament, and our commitment is rooted in a simple but powerful belief: that investing in children’s participation is investing in South Africa’s future governance. #ForEveryChild, a voice.

Over 95% of children and young people in South Africa access the internet. They have every right to enjoy the benefits it offers, but they must be equipped to navigate it safely. This is the message highlighted by children at a G20 online safety side event hosted by UNICEF, together with the Norwegian Embassy in South Africa and The Department of Communications and Digital Technologies this week. The gathering was a reminder that online safety isn't the responsibility of children alone but requires joint action from all of us, including government, schools, families, law enforcement and the tech industry. #ForEveryChild, protection.

Schools should be a place of safety and nurturing – not violence. When violence infiltrates our schools, it threatens the future of our children. #ForEveryChild to access quality education, we must come together to #EndViolence in schools.

78% of learners in South Africa, by grade 4, are taught in a language that is not their home language. With the support of the Gates Foundation and the Zenex Foundation, UNICEF and the Department of Basic Education are championing mother tongue education through the ‘Early Grade Reading Programme’, to improve the overall quality of literacy.

In South Africa, too many children leave primary school without being able to read for meaning. Helping children master the basics - reading, writing and counting - opens doors to education and opportunity. Donate now to help children get the strong start they deserve: https://bit.ly/4p5TasA #ForEveryChild, education.
