With millions expected to hit the roads this week for Thanksgiving, safety is top of mind for drivers everywhere. But what about the future of travel where #autonomousVehicles are the norm? Last month, we convened a panel at the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute (UMTRI) Symposium which asked how safe is safe enough when it comes to AVs. Thank you to our moderator, Greg McGuire as well as our panelists Amy Chu (Uber), Cooper L. (Consumer Reports), Brian Simmons (MITRE), Greg Stevens (Mcity), Jean Paul Velez (San Francisco County Transportation Authority), and Jon Wey (State Farm). Check out the exciting discussion before you head out the door 👇 📺 Watch AVs: How Safe Is Safe Enough?: https://lnkd.in/gPW_9xA9

Did you know that Mcity member Parallel Domain has completed a digital replica of the Test Facility? This high-fidelity simulation environment allows Mcity members and researchers to run perception, planning, prediction, and control tests with realism nearly indistinguishable from the physical track. Mcity reposted this
We just wrapped up a great week at 𝐒𝐀𝐄 𝐀𝐓𝐒 (𝐀𝐮𝐭𝐨𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐬𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐒𝐲𝐦𝐩𝐨𝐬𝐢𝐮𝐦), where we shared the latest on 𝐓𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐒𝐢𝐦 and had a lot of good conversations across the AV space. I also ended up riding Waymo many times — a good reminder of how far the tech has come, and how far we still have to go to make AVs deploy everywhere. One thing that really stood out is 𝐡𝐨𝐰 𝐛𝐢𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐠𝐚𝐩 𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐢𝐬 𝐛𝐞𝐭𝐰𝐞𝐞𝐧 𝐀𝐕 𝐝𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐥𝐨𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐞𝐥𝐬𝐞 — cities working on permitting, regulators asking for interpretable safety evidence, insurers needing a basis for pricing, and the public who just want to understand why this is safe. And this isn’t just between different companies; it happens even within the same company. Waymo in SF and Waymo in Tokyo basically have to rebuild the safety story from scratch for a new set of stakeholders. We think 𝐡𝐢𝐠𝐡-𝐟𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲, 𝐜𝐢𝐭𝐲-𝐬𝐜𝐚𝐥𝐞 𝐬𝐢𝐦𝐮𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 is one of the most practical ways to bridge that gap — when AVs can be tested in virtual cities that truly behave like the real world, including rare corner cases, safety becomes something you can demonstrate proactively. That’s exactly why we’re building and open-sourcing TeraSim World: a transparent, reproducible platform that gives developers, OEMs, cities, regulators, insurers, and researchers a shared safety language. Huge thanks to Parallel Domain, Bot Auto, and Mcity for collaborating with us, and thanks to everyone who stopped by at ATS. Lots of great discussions, and we learned a lot. More updates soon — and if you want to try or contribute to TeraSim, the open-source repo is here: https://lnkd.in/emcHTNBU
