What if I told you that for just $20,000 you could have a sweater-wearing stranger snoop around your house and take care of all your chores way worse than if you did them yourself? “I do hope that, in not so long, just like we take energy for granted around us, we will be able to take labor around us for granted.” — Bernt Børnich on the TED Conferences stage, Founder of 1X who thinks this is a good vision for the future. “If we don’t have your data, we can’t make the product better” — 1X CEO saying the quiet part out loud “If you’re running human-in-the-loop robotics trials in people’s living rooms, that’s called a paid field study, not the future of domestic life.” — me, in Life With Machines So much has been said about this robot, but the biggest thing is that it's not a robot. It's a data land grab, and there's a much better way to build the future than to bill people for the privilege of raising your toddler machine for you. We could have local compute and storage; data controls; and focused uses. We don't need to create a worse version of people while waving our hands about redefining humanity.
