Hundreds of thousands of Floridians are leaving their homes under mandatory evacuation orders. But Milton could also have a major impact on Florida wildlife - and as Stephanie Hanes writes for The Christian Science Monitor, that even includes a sea turtle that was washed ashore during Helene. Read her story on the efforts scientists and veterinarians are making to protect more of Florida's wildlife. https://lnkd.in/eC7kXt8f #hurricanes #Milton #Helene #florida

Degraded but not defeated, underground but enduring, #Hamas’ low-profile survival in #Gaza is challenging both the organization’s and #Israel’s narratives of “victory” one year into a devastating war triggered by its deadly attack a year ago. https://lnkd.in/dUtdNbXG

"For 2.2 million Palestinians in Gaza and tens of thousands more in the West Bank, Oct. 7 is more than the date of an attack, a war, or a catastrophe – it is a dividing line between two lives. In some ways, Oct. 7 is a beginning – the start of hardships none had before imagined possible and that continue to upend, interrupt, and disrupt lives across the Gaza Strip and the West Bank today. The Mellon grant has lead to the digitalization of more than 7,000 programs from Monitor Radio, covering several years of historic events including the Fall of the Berlin Wall, the collapse of communism in Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union, and the war in Bosnia, and so much more. Thank you Karen Cariani!
Last month, Michelle Kelley, PhD, Media Historian and Curator at the American Archive of Public Broadcasting (AAPB), delivered an insightful presentation at the Grassroots Radio Conference, hosted by 102.3FM WHIV-LP. Her talk, "Saving Community Radio: The American Archive of Public Broadcasting and the Benefits of Digital Preservation," shed light on the crucial work the AAPB does to preserve community radio programming. Kelley also shared how stations can nominate their materials for digitization through our recent Mellon Foundation grant, which will allow us to digitize over 150,000 programs and analog recordings from stations across the U.S. over the next three years at no cost to stations. “Nonprofit and community media play a critical role in American society. They provide information, give voice to minority viewpoints, and shape the public’s understanding of key issues. By preserving this programming, stations ensure future generations recognize the value of community radio in upholding American democracy,” Kelley emphasized. Want to preserve your station’s history? Can a work stoppage flip an election? Economically, Tuesday's longshoremen's strike puts a hard stop on nearly half of America’s imports and a good share of exports. But the Harris campaign has a lot at stake as well. The strike, in its second day, puts Kamala Harris in a bind. With election Day only five weeks away, does she push the administration to step in and temporarily end the strike, angering her union base? Or does she work behind the scenes, hoping the two sides settle before consumers feel the pinch? The Christian Science Monitor's Laurent Belsie is writing that the strike and its potential impact on inflation may test the Biden-Harris administration. The mountainous communities of North Carolina were once considered low-risk from extreme weather. Helene has changed all of that. While the immediate focus in the wake of Hurricane Helene is on recovery and relief, its damage is most severe in places where people were neither expecting nor well prepared for a tropical deluge. That includes, in particular, mountainous North Carolina, where flood waters swept away entire neighborhoods, downed power and water systems, and crushed roads that connected residents. Helene’s rapid intensification and stunning destruction in places once considered “climate havens” revealed what scientists have long warned are stark vulnerabilities in American infrastructure and policy at a time when global warming is exacerbating extreme weather. The storm’s aftermath has also highlighted the sort of resilience experts say will be needed to rebuild and prepare for a warmer future. The Christian Science Monitor's Stephanie Hanes and Stephanie Castellano look at the need to prepare for risks in new places. Junior, a sizable black bear, has been living in the crawlspace of a Sierra Madre, California, home near this scene. Audra Donahue had walked across this sidewalk just "two seconds" before she noticed Junior lumbering by, she says. This is the video she took from the safety of her car. Sierra Madre, which sits in the foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains on the eastern edge of LA, is a “hot spot” for human-black bear interactions. Police in this 3-square-mile suburb received 307 calls about bears in 2023 – triple that of the year before; and there were 91 from March through May this year, the Los Angeles Daily News reported in June. Read more of The Christian Science Monitor's Ali Martin's story on the proliferation of bear sightings in the nation's second-largest metropolitan area here: https://lnkd.in/ejFakDuX Video courtesy of Audra Donahue. #LosAngeles #bears

Great weekend read: Why are tornadoes swirling in unusual places? This week's devastation caused by hurricane Helene points out the need for accurate weather tracking. That's why watching the trends of tornadoes is also critical, especially since the twisters have decided to begin shifting east in the US. The Christian Science Monitor's Danish Bajwa writes that tornadoes are touching down in seemingly unusual places, from Virginia to Michigan. And researchers suggest that the shift might represent a larger trend. Find out more in his story here: https://lnkd.in/egHrFvWN #tornadoes #disasters #weather #trendingtopics

Could the corruption indictment against NY Mayor Eric Adams have ripple effects on the presidential campaign or congressional races? The Christian Science Monitor's Linda Feldmann reports the indictment is a blow to Democrats right before the November elections. Linda writes "The race for control of the U.S. House, with Republicans currently holding a narrow majority, will hinge on just a few races. One of them happens to be on Long Island."
