As the school year begins, students at Middle Years Alternative and Parkway West High Schools enjoy the shade of over 50 trees planted through Deeply Rooted, our Healthier Together initiative's partnership with Penn Medicine, University of Pennsylvania Health System that has planted 1,000 trees and greened 1,000 vacant lots in West and Southwest Philadelphia. Through collaboration with community partners such as Pennsylvania Horticultural Society (PHS) and The School District of Philadelphia, students are discovering different street tree species, how to care for them and how greening can improve community health. More than 32 pairs of conjoined twins have been separated at CHOP since 1957, the most of any hospital in the country. Addy and Lily’s journey began at their 20-week ultrasound, when the image showed they were attached at the abdomen. Their parents met with specialists in CHOP’s Richard D. Wood Jr. Center for Fetal Diagnosis and Treatment, where they were determined to be excellent candidates for separation surgery. After months of planning, Addy and Lily were born on November 18, 2020, in our Special Delivery Unit (SDU) and separated during a 10-hour surgery on October 13, 2021. The surgical team included more than two dozen specialists, including general surgeons, anesthesiologists, radiologists, a cardiothoracic surgeon, and plastic surgeons. Watch Addy and Lily's story below and learn more about careers in our pioneering Department of #Surgery: http://ms.spr.ly/6041s56DN
