Non-profit Organizations

A creative NGO that empowers individuals & communities to navigate & mitigate digital technology's impacts on society.

About us

Tactical Tech is a creative international non-profit with over two decades of experience dedicated to exploring the socio-political and environmental impacts of technology. We work to empower individuals and communities to navigate and mitigate the ways digital technologies change their lives and transform societies. Advancing knowledge, critical thinking and capacity building are central to our work. Through our Tactical Tech Studio, focused on Digital Literacy and our Tactical Tech Institute for Digital Investigation, we conduct research on the intersection of technology and society and develop creative, engaging and evidence-based interventions, resources, and tools —such as exhibitions, kits, guides and training programs — that confront conventional narratives and provoke critical thinking about technology impacts. Our interventions and resources ignite conversations and drive transformative action. Collaboration is at the heart of what we do. We work closely with individuals, communities, and a global network of partners in education, culture, independent media, civil society, and relevant decision-makers. Together, we co-develop resources that our partners use, adapt, build upon, and often localize to engage and empower their communities. We aim to redefine digital society by building the skills, understanding, and capacity of individuals and communities, enabling them to navigate and respond to the challenges and opportunities created by digital technologies. • #Gettingreadyfor2025 🌟 At Tactical Tech, we champion a shift in perspective—from valuing technology solely for short-term convenience to prioritizing long-term sustainability, with trust at the heart of it all. ❓ Why does this matter? Proprietary software (the "black boxes") demands blind faith, keeping users in the dark about their data, security, and control. In contrast, open-source software (the "open boxes") offers higher levels of transparency, empowering users to take control of their digital environments. The tools we use and recommend are guided by seven key principles: ✅ Open Source: Transparent and non-proprietary ✅ Trusted: Audited and reliable ✅ Mature: Stable, with active community support ✅ User-Friendly: Designed for accessibility ✅ Multi-Language: Localized for global use ✅ Multi-Platform: Compatible across Mac, Windows, Linux, and Android ✅ Well-Documented: Easy to understand and implement 💻 Some of the open-source tools we rely on and recommend include: _Content Collaboration Platforms: Nextcloud _Text, Video, Audio Editing: LibreOffice, OBS Studio, Audacity, Shotcut _Operating Systems (We prefer various Linux flavours): Linux (Debian, Ubuntu, Mint, Tails), Canonical, Red Hat, and Fedora Project _Internet Browsers: The Tor Project Browser, Brave, Mullvad VPN (Browser), and Mozilla.ai Firefox _Secure Email and Calendars: Thunderbird, Proton Mail, Tuta, Riseup _Instant Messaging: Signal, Element, Wire _VPNs: Mullvad VPN, Proton VPN _Social Media and Video sharing: Mastodon, Bluesky Social, PeerTube _Virtual Meetings: BigBlueButton _Analytics: Matomo _Project Development: GitLab _Password managers: KeePassXC, Proton Pass Learn more about how we work and download the complete list: https://lnkd.in/d2jqZ9gf By adopting and promoting these tools, we aim to empower individuals, organizations, and communities to regain control of their privacy and the digital environment. ✨ What tools do you use? Open Data Day 2025 is here! 🎉 📅 Come join us in the Wikirate office for a discussion on the 12th of March on the evolving role of #OpenData in #ESG for advocacy. Open data is a key tool for corporate accountability, human rights, and sustainability, but what happens when transparency is weakened? The Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) was meant to improve corporate disclosure, but recent proposed rollbacks threaten these transparency gains. How can we still use data to hold companies accountable? What role does open data play in fostering a fairer and more sustainable world? We've invited Laura R. from Tactical Tech, Kate Jelly from Business & Human Rights Resource Centre, and Luis Costa from World Benchmarking Alliance to discuss how data shapes their work. Join us for a discussion with researchers and activists on how data shapes their work, the growing challenges of accessing corporate transparency information, and the evolving role of open data in advocacy. 📅 Date: 12.03.2025, Time: 4:00-6:00pm 📍 Location: Wikirate office, Berlin Let’s celebrate open data as a force for change! Join us in person and be part of the conversation. 🔗 More info and free tickets: https://lnkd.in/d9YhwGuT #OpenDataDay #ODD2025 #HumanRights #Sustainability #OpenData
