TABLE is a global platform working for a sustainable and ethical food system.

About us

TABLE is a platform working for a sustainable and ethical food system by helping stakeholders navigate the interplay of evidence and values shaping global debates about the future of food. The starting point for our work is that while myriad solutions for addressing our food system problems have been proposed, agreement and action are obstructed by increasing trends of misinformation, polarisation, and piecemeal, short-term thinking around the world. TABLE exists as an antidote to these threats. We produce and communicate accurate knowledge that explores contested food topics in their systems context, showing the interplay of values and evidence and clarifying why people disagree; we provide spaces for constructive dialogue within the food community; and we foster thinking for the long term by co-creating positive visions for the future of food, and pathways to achieving them. Together, these ingredients contribute to our vision: a better decision-making environment for food system transformation, built on shared understanding of the evidence and the values at play.

Dear TABLE community, we’re pleased to announce we have a new advisory board! We've been welcoming the new board over the last couple of weeks. You can find the full list of our advisory board here: https://lnkd.in/gx2Bmd5H Please join us in giving a warm welcome to Natalia Bellostas Muguerza! Natalia says: "TABLE has inspired my work over recent years, due not only to the extremely timely and well-documented essays, reports and podcasts, but specially because its publications bring forward the nuances, trade-offs and even contradictions we currently have in our food systems. TABLE shows that we need more honest and authentic dialogue among stakeholders across lines of difference, and I hope to contribute to its success in this new term.” Natalia Bellostas Muguerza is CEO at INTIA, a public organization delivering services across the agri-food value chain in Navarra, Spain. Natalia holds a MSc in Agronomy (Public University of Navarra), and a PhD in Plant Biochemistry (Københavns Universitet - University of Copenhagen), having also worked as R&D consultant for Universities, NGOs and RTOs, raising funds across different EU programmes. In her current position at INTIA, Natalia engages with a wide array of stakeholders, from smallholder farmers selling to local consumers through short value chains, to large agri-food industries and cooperatives operating in international markets. This privileged view of the interplay between the local and global perspectives allows her to witness first-hand the challenges and dilemmas facing food systems and has allowed her to build a deep understanding of the needs, levers and barriers for the much-needed sustainability transition.

  • Have we reached a fork in the road? Join us for our next webinar on 4 November from 16:00-17:30 GMT! Register here: https://lnkd.in/g3dhwJ6B The first United Nations Conference of the Parties (COP1) was held in 1995 in Berlin, thirty years ago. Since then, the scale and attention paid to this annual conference has expanded, along with goals for, and expectations of it. The conference has seen many landmark negotiations and agreements, and, as evidence about the drivers and impact of climate change has grown, the discussions in this space have evolved. But has this evolution progressed in an effective direction? And what about food? How have food systems been integrated (or excluded) from these climate-focused discussions over time? In this TABLE event, we will look back on what has been achieved in advancing sustainable food systems over the last thirty years, and what role COP discussions have played here, in raising food’s profile or in incentivising actual progress. As for the present and the future, what needs to be achieved this year at COP30? And where do we hope we will be in 30 years’ time? How might we get there, and what can future COPs do to help make this happen?  Join our panel of thinkers and doers at this TABLE event, who bring their expertise and reflections to bear on the history, present and future of these international climate negotiations and the evolving food system landscape. Panelists: - Jessica Fanzo (Food for Humanity Initiative, Columbia University) - Oliver Camp (Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN)) - Matheus Alves Zanella (Global Alliance for the Future of Food) Register here: https://lnkd.in/g3dhwJ6B

  • Are you a food researcher or knowledge generator? We want to hear from you to help shape research within the UK and the EU! TABLE and the Centre for Food Policy in partnership with Wellcome Trust, have launched a new survey to gather perspectives on how research funding can better facilitate climate and health goals via food system transformation. Results are anonymous and will inform Wellcome Trust's research strategy for the next few years. Take the survey here: https://lnkd.in/gM8Wx7M6

  • Dear TABLE community, we’re pleased to announce we have a new advisory board! We'll be sharing the rest of the new members one by one over the next week or so. Please join us in giving a warm welcome to Ken Giller! Ken says: "TABLE provides a great forum for debate concerning thorny issues across the whole food system, which continually challenges my preconceptions and beliefs. I’m delighted to be able to support and advise, and excited to work together with TABLE’s excellent team.” Ken Giller is Emeritus Professor in the Plant Production Systems Group - Wageningen University & Research. Ken’s research focuses on smallholder farming systems in sub-Saharan Africa, and in particular problems of soil fertility and the role of nitrogen fixation in tropical legumes. Ken joined Wageningen University & Research as Chair of Plant Production Systems in 2001 after holding professorships at Wye College, University of London, and the University of Zimbabwe. To hear more from Ken, check out our recent Feed Podcast episode with him called "The Perils of Populism and Precarious Promise of Regenerative Agriculture" here: https://lnkd.in/g8zwbKhs Learn more about our other new advisory board members here: https://lnkd.in/gx2Bmd5H

  • Join us later today for "Where is Food on the COP Menu?" at 16:15 BST / 17:15 CEST! Register to attend in-person: https://lnkd.in/gBar-6cF Register to attend online: https://lnkd.in/gWA_bcZq As COP30 approaches, questions about the role of food systems in global climate negotiations are more urgent than ever. Despite being responsible for a significant share of greenhouse gas emissions and being especially vulnerable to the impacts of climate change, food systems have long remained on the margins of COP discussions, sidelined to external pavilions and parallel sessions rather than featured on the main stage. In this TABLE event, we ask our panelists to envision a gathering of world leaders and decisionmakers in the near future that adequately weighs the role of food systems in climate change and understands the measures needed to shift diets in a sustainable way and scale back food systems’ impact on the environment. We’ll explore how food systems could gain stronger recognition at COP30 and beyond. What would an ambitious, food-centered climate agenda look like? Drawing on their expertise and the most recent evidence, such as the EAT-Lancet report, our panel will discuss how rethinking food could reshape these international conversations. Panel: - Senni Alho, Innovations Officer, Clim-Eat - Sigrid Wertheim-Heck🟥, Associate Professor in Global Food System Sustainability at the Environmental Policy Group @WUR, Wageningen University & Research - Tamsir Sallah, Member of the IAAS (International Association of Students in Agricultural and Related Sciences) & Former Exchange Coordinator of IAAS Netherlands - Jillian Student (moderator), Knowledge integrator and researcher on transdisciplinary research and education, Wageningen University & Research Please note: Event starts at 17:15 CEST local time (in the Netherlands) and but is listed as 16:15 BST here for our online audience in London.

Climate is at every dinner table: so where is food on the COP30 Brazil menu ⁉️ If we’re serious about tackling climate change and driving the urgent environmental and social transformations we need, we must talk about food. 🌍 🍽️ Food makes climate action real. It moves the conversation beyond abstract numbers and big goals — connecting climate change to our everyday choices, habits, and plates. I’m happy to contribute to this open and necessary dialogue organized by TABLE.
