  • Social media can quietly fuel body insecurities and disordered eating. Constant exposure to filtered, unrealistic images create harmful comparisons and pressures to look a certain way. Over time, this can contribute to low self-esteem, negative body image, and the development of eating disorders. It’s important to be mindful of what you are viewing — and remember, what you see isn’t always real.

  • When fixation on appearance crosses into obsession, it may be body dysmorphic disorder (BDD). BDD causes intense preoccupation with perceived flaws in appearance — often small or imagined — leading to shame, isolation, or constant checking. This can trigger restrictive eating or extreme exercise, increasing the risk of developing an eating disorder. Both conditions are fueled by a negative body image and low self-esteem, but recovery is possible with the proper support.
