It’s #RoadSafetyWeek in the UK led by Brake, the road safety charity, and we want to acknowledge Active Travel England for publishing its new guidance on the 16 Critical Safety Issues for Walking, Wheeling and Cycling. This is a hugely valuable contribution for everyone working to improve active-travel networks. One of the most tangible issues highlighted in the guidance is surface quality and maintenance defects (Issue #14) — something we see every day in the data captured by See.Sense riders. The example below shows this in action: 🔍 On the left: clusters of surface-roughness events detected by See.Sense sensors. 🛣️ On the right: the actual potholes and degraded surfacing at the same location. This kind of insight helps local authorities see issues earlier, prioritise maintenance based on evidence, and understand how defects affect real-world rider behaviour — including braking, swerving, and avoidance of protected space. Alongside surface quality, our data also supports several other safety considerations highlighted in the guidance and ATE’s Route Check Tool, including: - Kerbside loading conflicts (SA05) — braking and swerving around parked or unloading vehicles - Motor-traffic speed and volume (SA08 & SA09) — where riders slow, hesitate or divert due to intimidating conditions These insights help planners build stronger scheme designs, target interventions, and improve the comfort and safety of active-travel routes.
