Sea levels are rising faster in American Samoa than the global average, partly due to land subsidence, or the gradual sinking of land, caused by a 2009 earthquake and tsunami. This combination means higher tides, more powerful waves and a coastline that’s increasingly vulnerable to flooding. A recent study completed by University of Hawaii Sea Grant College Program used observational data and modeling to show that these rising seas make every wave hit harder, putting coastal roads, homes and infrastructure at greater risk. The earthquake’s effects still impact American Samoa today, with wave energy reaching further inland and the possibility of more frequent floods on the horizon. By better understanding these threats, Sea Grant helps communities prepare for and adapt to changing conditions, building a stronger, safer coast for future generations.
