Creating human-like intelligence in general-purpose robots
About us
Sanctuary is on a mission to create the world’s first human-like intelligence in general-purpose robots that will help us work more safely, efficiently, and sustainably. And in the not-too-distant future, help us explore, settle, and prosper in outer space. Members of the Sanctuary team founded D-Wave (a pioneer in the quantum computing industry), Kindred (first use of reinforcement learning in a production robot), and the Creative Destruction Lab (pioneered a revolutionary method for the commercialization of science for the betterment of humankind). The team has experience launching market-defining innovations rooted in previously unsolved and deep scientific problems.

Our CEO James G. Wells has published a powerful op-ed on TheFutureEconomy.ca that assesses the future of physical AI in Canada. Canada helped shape the global AI revolution, but when it comes to robotics and embodied physical AI, we're at a critical crossroads that puts our productivity, data, and industrial sovereignty at risk. This is a must-read for anyone thinking about the future of the Canadian economy, innovation strategy, and the next era of AI leadership. Physical AI is a labour force multiplier that will define national competitiveness for decades to come–a solid national strategy is essential for Canada’s future economic success. Read it here: https://lnkd.in/geFDxCZM
Canada’s Next Strategic Bet: Moving from Digital AI Pioneer to Physical AI Leader. Canada has earned global recognition for pioneering digital AI. However, when it comes to Physical AI-general-purpose robotics that integrate intelligence with physical capability-a cohesive national strategy is still missing. This technology is poised to become the physical workforce of the future, impacting productivity across manufacturing, logistics, healthcare, and agriculture. -> The Challenge: Other nations are moving fast. Canada risks either exporting its groundbreaking IP or importing its future labour, surrendering sovereignty and productivity gains to foreign suppliers. -> The Path Forward: The op-ed on TheFutureEconomy.ca argues Canada must align government, industry, and academia to build a strategy that encourages both the creation and the domestic adoption of Physical AI technologies. Canada possesses world-class talent and IP. The goal is to build a unified strategy that supports our industrial base and long-term national resilience. Read more from James G. Wells, CEO of Sanctuary AI at the link below.

In our latest blog post, we detail our use of NVIDIA Isaac Lab to train our highly capable hydraulic hands to perform cutting edge manipulation tasks, first in simulation, and ultimately in reality. “Our proprietary robotic hand is differentiated by a high number of active degrees of freedom, allowing for finger abduction and therefore in-hand manipulation, a feature not offered by other commercially available hands. We are unique in our use of hydraulic actuation, providing high strength, speed and controllability. Our miniaturized hydraulic valves provide a path to achieving human-level dexterity.” Learn more: https://lnkd.in/giDmsg-E #AI #Humanoid #GeneralPurposeRobots #SanctuaryAI #NVIDIA #GTC25

Sanctuary AI new touch sensor technology is now integrated into our general purpose robots. Why this matters: (1) Improvements in new tactile sensors enable general purpose robots to perform complex, touch-driven tasks with precision and accuracy (2) Richer behavioral data collected from new tactile sensors allows embodied physical AI models to be more robust and performant “The sense of touch is a key enabler for creating human-level dexterity in robots and critical for physical AI to achieve its full potential.” - James G. Sanctuary AI continues to lead the way in intellectual property for humanoid robotics. In this new IAM interview, our SVP of Intellectual Property, Thomas Mahon, discusses how Sanctuary AI’s strategy in IP underpins our competitive edge in the emerging field of Physical AI—from dexterous hands and tactile feedback, to the cognitive systems that power our general purpose robots. “... we’ve spent the last five years building one of the most robust and strategic patent portfolios in the field to ensure we remain highly differentiated and well-protected as we realize Physical AI for general-purpose robots. We anticipated this would become a fiercely competitive space and so made the decision early on to invest in both direct patent filings and strategic patent acquisitions.” — Thomas Mahon, SVP of IP, Sanctuary AI IAM subscribers can read the full interview here: https://lnkd.in/gSXee3Yn

Morgan Stanley has ranked Sanctuary AI #3 on their latest list of published US patent filings in the humanoid space, however, it only identified 51 of the approximately 140 published US patent filings made to date by Sanctuary AI. “... one of the key moats in the Physical AI market will be intellectual property. When looking at the past to other significant moments in tech, such as the advent of smartphones, IP assets became immensely valuable. Our commanding IP position ensures that Sanctuary will remain highly differentiated and protected as we continue on path to creating Physical AI for general purpose robots.” - James G. Thank you Tech Talent North for including Sanctuary AI at #TTNWest!
This afternoon at #TTNWest, Sanctuary AI brought the audience into the future, one where AI doesn’t replace people but redefines the work we do. With hiring challenges mounting across industries, especially in the U.S., Sanctuary AI is creating dexterity-driven physical AI: humanoid robots designed to take on tasks, not jobs. The goal isn’t replacement; it’s relief. Key Themes discussed by Lewisa Anciano and Ben Nyland: • Digital AI vs. Physical AI: Digital AI (like ChatGPT) enhances cognition. Physical AI performs real-world work, using robotics, perception, and reasoning to augment human capability. • Cultural Readiness: Companies leading the way aren’t avoiding the AI conversation; they’re inviting it. Transparency builds trust. Teams that understand why AI is being used see it as a partnership, not a threat. • Societal Responsibility: As this tech advances across sectors, Sanctuary AI emphasized conscious development, building systems that support, protect and strengthen human work, not just automate it. The takeaway: The future of work isn’t human or AI, it’s humans and AI, working side by side. #TTNWest #TechTalentNorth #SanctuaryAI #FutureOfWork #AI #Innovation #PeopleAndCulture #HRTech

Sanctuary AI introduces new tactile sensors for general purpose robots. We are focused on building human-level dexterity for general purpose robots to perform high value work tasks—which requires a delicate but durable sense of touch. Our team of industry-leading experts in tactile sensing developed new tactile sensor technology that is compliant, sensitive, and durable at low manufacturing costs. “The team continues to innovate and patent in crucial areas that we know are going to be critical for the future embodied AI ecosystem. In combination with the touch sensors, we are using haptic servoing techniques to maximize dexterous capabilities for general purpose robots,” said James G. Wells, CEO at Sanctuary AI. #AI #Robotics #EmbodiedAI
